View Full Version : Folding wing mirrors

Noticed at the shops a 2008 Pajero with folding wing mirrors.
Is it possible to perhaps do the same to mine.
With the pajero when the vehicle is off the mirrors fold in and when reverse is selected they fold out.
Would it be a case of obtaining the motors and creating a wiring loom to circuit switches in the shifter and ignition.
I just hate it when people go past your car and knock the mirror and just leave it.
Any thoughts or has someone actually done this?
Does anyone know do those folding mirrors have a spring in them like standard ones as well as the folding mechanism? What happens if you hit it while its folded out?

Most Japanese cars have it - looks like a Diamante option -
http://www.trademe.co.nz/nz/auction-163403376.htm - it's mentioned on that page

Yes the JDM cars have this option. The button is located above the mirror switch on the door panel

And why did they put the power mirror controls in the dash for Magnas, but in that Diamante, the door?
Because they have something else where the mirror switch goes. No idea what though. It looks like some form of elaborate credit card storage device!

Yeh it's a card slot. I've even seen one with a slide out tray instead of a card slot. They even came with a different centre console (as seen in the pic above), and they also had folding arm rests on each of the front seats.

the folding mirrors have a spring so when they are out they can be physcailly pushed back in or pulled right forward (say if you are reversing and clip a pole) Everything for their use in sontained inside the casing itself, so as long as you can attach them to the little 1/4 piece that holds them to the door itself they will work and look good (of and all the wiring ofcourse)

Damn it's even better having the mirror switch on the doors and ches look even better than ours. Damn veh.
Wonder if the Diamante window is auto down and UP??!! not having auto up annoys me, every other car I've had with power windows had auto up and down.

Airbag cover design looks a lot better than ours too.
Honestly, why didn't we get any of the good stuff?? They built them here
Because its not needed in Australia.
The reason JDM cars have this is due to their right parking spaces, so the mirrors fold in to prevent scrapping against poles/cars. We, being the lucky country, have large land, and large parking spaces..
This is a nice rice mod :P

I tried this using diamante wing mirrors (2nd gen)
almost the same shape but a bit smaller, so unless you are good at customizing they wont fit very well, also the bolt holes dont line up, so the door frames will need re-drilling to fit them, I was going to get them but eh, just mirrors, besides just picked up my fully color coded freshly sprayed standard mirrors today :D sexynessss

God, you just want to import it and then swap everything over.

I know, the Japanese built Diamantes were far advanced than those built here. I guess our Magnas and Veradas had to be dumbed down in order to match price and compete with the large cars on sale here.

i know not quite what you want, but
the mirrors on ours cars do fold over and against the car - just you have to do it manually and remember to unfold them when you get in the car again.
would be cool to have an auto retracting feature, but prolly more effort than its worth unfort :(
n it also sucks how we got the dumb speced cars.. esp considering... aus built! grrr
why whernt some of these things at least optional?!

Apparently the story is that the JDM Diamante was to compete with the Honda Legend/5 Series/E Class/etc which is ambitious at best.
Therefore, in 1995 when the car was released they did the Japanese thing (which is now the Korean thing) of offering it at a reduced price (compared to the competitors) with huge lumps of techno kit as std. The JDM cars are arguably much better speced with even the 95 model coming with things like Nardi wheels, GDI technology, Tiptronic trans (5 sp), & odd stuff like rear wiper on the sedan. But then again they have a foot park brake.
I feel ripped off that even the NADM cars were better specced than ours and THEY were built here and shipped there. NADM cars got over my KH Xi passenger power seat with elec lumbar, Homelink map light thing, Memory Drivers Seat, Multiplex wiring, Auto wipers, and most importantly those lights under the door pockets which even a KE has and mine doesn't!!!
Edit: Mohit is correct and I will carify NA= North America JDM cars were built in Japan hence the goodies. All others including wagons were built here in Aus

I thought JDM Diamantes were built in Japan, while ADM and USDM ones were built in Oz.

Yeah, those mirrors (on the new pajeros, colts and grandis - why they arent on the lancer and outlander is beyond me) are pretty cool.. There is a switch in the car on the mirror control that allows you to retract or unfold the mirrors as you please or, if you press the lock button on the central locking remote 3 times repeatedy they will fold in. Obviously if you press unlock 3 times they will unfold..
Its all wank factor though really.. saves bugger all space unless you have massive, huge towing mirrors or something like the new f-trucks have..

Ok guys... I know it is a 'sin' to bring up old threads from the grave, but I really want some information to see if anyone has got this one done!
I'm trying to order in a pair of the folding side mirrors, the switches and looms from Japan. Hopefully I can interest a few other members to take a look at this mod! Or tell me it doesn't fit our cars!

Not sure about the 3rd gens mate (mal can chime in on this) but the Looms are ENTIRELY different from diamantes to magnas
eg, I have the Diamante 30V entire loom. The door looms are different, The dash loom is different, every loom is different.
Your only real option besides importing an ENTIRE loom is find out what wires makes the mirrors fold in and out and wire them up to an ignition supply (or accessories whatever tickles your fancy)
The 1st gen diamante (TR/TS) folding mirrors have 9 wires per mirror, so a bit of food for thought.

I have a set of these here that I have had on my TF, I had them manually switched for a while to try them out
The mirrors are bolt on, the other good thing about these is that they completely dismantle so painting them properly is very easy.
Wiring them is not that hard, you can not use the switch panel that comes in the Diamante as the loom is very different, I was hoping to get a complete loom however all I was sent were a few cut off plugs
The trick is to have a circuit made up that does 2 things, it is triggered by the ignition or acc, it gives power and earth for 5 seconds then shuts down. Upon loss of the trigger, it gives power and earth but in reverse again for 5 seconds.
I was toying with using an elec arial that was busted but have not been able to find a 3 pin arial that is stuffed and can thus be pulled apart

Hey Mal,
As I have a Verada, will i be able to integrate the chromatic mirror in? Since they are straight bolt ons, how about the connectors?
Your idea of using using an electric aerial is highly feasible! Might be a good try! :)
I'm just thinking if it is feasible at all to actually buy a JDM Diamante halfcut and then grab all the good bits off it.
There are some Jap wreckers who will source halfcuts for you......not sure how much it costs, but seeing as they bring in halfcuts for themselves and then strip them, you could potentially see if the dollars are feasible.
That way you get all the electrical bits you need in one hit......and you could pawn off the excess on E-Bay ; I'm sure there are people who would be interested in things like the backlit dash or climate control clusters, business card holder, centre armrest, folding captain's chairs armrests etc......
