Well if dash lights arent working id say you have done a fuse. There is two reasons why that happens. One is you zapped wired and shorted it out. The other is you taped into original wiring harness for the earth and the new cd player has blown the fuse due to over load. You should aways run a new Earth when instaling a Aftermarket stereo as they draw alot more power than standard ones therefor overload the wiring.
If it not holding memeory then you have wired it up wrong. I suggest you get a test light. you can buy them as cheap as $5 but i do suggest you spend $20 on one that way it will last. Without a test light its hard to know what wires do what in the harness so you are working blinded. Test light will tell you in a matter of seconds which is the constant power and which is the igition wires.
Hope that helps. Good luck

You won't need the constant power wire, just a power wire that is active at ACC on. E.g. Cigarette lighter.

thanks, which fuse do u think it could be, because i replaced the one for interior lights and power antenna and it didn't make a difference. Also what coulour should the constant power be.
Thanks for your help

Try there, they should have a few wiring diagrams up. The Merc in question is a W201 isn't it? You might be able to find a Haynes manual in your library - its called Mercedes Benz 190, 190E &190D Petrol & Diesel 1983-93.

You will need the constant power for the clock memory any interupted power and you will loose preset stations from the memory and clock will reset to 12.00.You could just run a wire to the + battery terminal for you memory anyway as for the fuses have you tried the parklight fuse or you could go through them 1 by 1 and you can usally see when they are blown if none are blown you have cut into a wrong wire somewhere in the installation.

Well you need both.. You need constant power for and ign.. Constant power holds memeory and where ya CD is at and presets. ign just tells teh radio to turn on when you turn the car on..

I agree with jason here. running a new earth is easy as finding the old one. get some spare wire (black perferably) a spare self tapping metal screw (short, very short) and if you really want a ring crimp connector. join the 2 wires (solder and heat shrink is the tried and true mothod) and find a suitable place on the body (under the dash somewhere) chip off the paint to bare metal drive the screw in almost all the way wrap the wire around it and screw it down. this is what ive done in previous cars including the magna.
Just as a sudgestion get some masking tape and a pen and when you find the power and acc wires mark them. it makes things alot quicker if you ever want to install another CD player etc
Hope that helps even though its a bit long winded
Cheers

While I admire the efford if scratching off paint, why in the world do you use a self tapper?
For an earth, you use a bolt, not a self tapper.
Self tappers hang onto sheet metal with maybe one or two threads, then people wonder why they fall out after some time.....
Use a bolt, even a factory bolt will do.

Yeah as Ers said use a bolt.
You will find the Earthing wire from the aftermarket harness is thick and long ( hmmm  ) and already has some kind of connector on it already. I usually cut the connector off and make a loop from the wire about the size of the bolt making sure the loop is soldered together. As said scratch away paint and secure down.
