I'm planning to get a set of old secondhand rims from a friend but I don't know anything much about tyres. It's 15x6.5. How do I determine that the specs of the tyre that will fit onto the rim? I'm now using steel 14" wheels with 195/75/14. Would I be able to use 225/60/15? Would it be too fat for the rims?

Your best bet is to just go down to any tyre shop and ask them, they'll let you know what you can and can not do, and if they don't know then don't buy tyres off them.

225 width tyres should be able to fit onto 6.5" wheels (its the minimum
width for a 225 tyre) although 225/60/15 tyres would be bigger in overall
diameter to your current tyres.

195/75/14 has overall diameter of 648.1014 mm
225/60/15 has overall diameter of 651.0015 mm

a better choice would be 205/65/15 tyres. these are widely available and
quite cheap.

on a 6.5 rim 225/60/15 is perfect but 205/65 is meant for 6 inch rim and would be even bigger again in diameter, 2 mm increase with the 225/60/15 is nothing, equal to maybe 2 months wear and would look nice.

what about the offset of the wheels? nobody said anything about it in all these posts.

I think some positive offset wheels would look pretty nice on magnas, comming a little bit out of the wheel arches

Yeah, but thats assuming that 225/60/15 tyres are available. They are not,
at least not in Australia. 215/60/15 is available but is a little on the smaller
side.

205/65/15 has overall diameter of 647.5015 which is slightly smaller than
195/75/14 and can be fitted to 6.5" wheels as stated by toyo's website

205/50R15 89V 8.2 587 210 271 223 285 6.50 558 5.5 - 7.5
195/50R15 82V 8.2 577 199 267 211 280 6.00 568 5.5 - 7.0
205/55R15 88V 8.2 608 212 279 225 295 6.50 540 5.5 - 7.5

where it states that 205 width tyres can be fitted to 5.5 to 7.5" wheels and
is tested on 6.5" wheels.

On the topic of offsets, yes, a wheel with a bit of lip looks nice on a magna/
verada, ala mine which has a 1" lip.

I think some positive offset wheels would look pretty nice on magnas, comming a little bit out of the wheel arches

2nd gen has +46mm offset (not sure about 3rd gen); and it is negative offset that makes the wheel move outwards of the wheel arch. e.g. a +35 wheel will hang outwards more than a +50. Keep in mind that changing the offset by more than 20% is going to put some serious stress on your wheel bearings; but any change at all will change the handling characteristics of the car.
