Hi guys,

I'm looking to give the tiptronic in my TF Sports a service this weekend.

I've not done an auto box before, but is there anyone who has a service manual or something for the auto box?

Given that the car has so many km's on it now (375,000km), is there a thicker oil i can use to help preserve the gearbox etc..?

What are you guys using in yours?

Is the drain plug for the oil at the rear of the box? (I haven't bothered looking for it yet)

Thanks guys.

the only recommendation i have is use GENUINE Mitsubishi gearbox oil.For some strange reasons magna's don't like to use any other type of oil.

For the Magna, you'll need a 24mm socket for the sump plug.
Also, be sure to change the ATF filter as well. Part number MD752072 and genuine SPIII ATF part number MR922838.
I purchased 2 x 5 litre SPIII ATF. I used 3 litres to flush with the sump off and then filled it with 5 litres.
Be sure to have lots of rags handy and also an oil filter remover - the type that clamps from the top which you attach to a wrench, not the bike chain/ring type as the ATF filter is in a very tight spot in the engine bay.
I actually used a rubber jar lid opener and used both hands to unwind it.
Let us know how you go man.

Somewhere on the Forum is a complete copy of the factory workshop manual that gives you a really good step-by-step guide. Anybody got the link??

Scratch that. Here 'tis http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56815&page=4

+1 for the Genuine Mitsubishi automatic gearbox fluid. Gearboxes are funny creatures and it is very competitive price wise as well.

cheers guys.

I've noticed that i've been getting **** fuel consumption over the past 2 weeks too, I'd assume that this is a major cause of it.

the box seems to be quite jerky on some changes, and it feels like i've got to push the car a bit harder to get it go to now.

i'll be doing an engine service too, but i think the box is the main issue.

The gearbox is about 25,000km OVERDUE for its service. lol

To get the level right I over fill a bit, drive gently it to heat it up and then use a piece of tube with a zip tie to mark the level at the top of the filler tube and a large syringe to suck out the excess and get the level spot on.

That's one way to do it. Another is to fill it to the 'cold' mark, then add 800ml. I've found that that is consistently about what needs to be added after changing the oil and filling to cold mark to have it sitting nicely in hot range on the dipstick.

With both pans empty you will need 5.5 litres of fluid

I would suggest a flush if the existing fluid is fairly dirty.

In relation to Fluid, there are several on the market these days that will be the same as the "mitsubishi" branded fluid which is not actually made by Mitsubishi anyway.

I generally purchase 20 or 60l drums of Lubrimax (specifies on the drum is specifically made for Mitsubishi Magna Tansmissions) fluid at a time as is a lot cheaper and have this fluid in all of my customers cars with not a single issue to date (including my TR and TF)

I got a quote the other day for getting someone to do it, and they quoted me $166.

That included new oil, filter, and they would tighten up the bands while they were at it.

I've never dealt with Auto boxes before, is this a comparable price?

I'm thinking about just getting them to do it, as we are in the process of packing to move, as we just bought our first house, and don't really have the time to to the service on it etc.

hmmmm
