I dunno how long its been going on but today when I was leaving work I could hear a ticking or a rattle noise from the engine. It usually has a noise when started from cold and runs rough until its warmed up and its quietens and smooths out.

Last time I spoke to wollongongverada he said it was normal for 3.5lts to be rought in the morning but Im gettin a bit concerned about this sound. I'll attach a sound or a youtube link tomorrow when the engine is cold as I only just home from work.

I've read up on the lifters sound and am aware of the problem there but has there been many cases of piston slap with magnas? and what damage can occur to the engine?

Mines got a rattle when I first start it on a cold morning, doesn't happen on normal/warm mornings though. I got over it.

I did have a tappeting sound at idle, an oil change sorted that. Could be the oil your using?

i have the same thing, i was reading the workshop manual, it said possibly the lash adjustors need a clean, i think you clean them in diesel fuel, they are a bit tedious to remove

Its a Magna thing, lets call it 'charecter' :)

I swapped to Penrite HPR 5 recently, the noise went away, as did any 'roughness' on cold starts, its not what Mitsui reccomends, however, it works, and engine felt like new after this oil change :)

Yep,My TW VRX had a new short block put in at 45,000 clicks after i did my nana at a service department, sounded like a bloody diesel when warm, and only when warm, was quiet when cold,so if its only noisy when cold,i say lifters, when hot, piston slap, the latter was my problem

I tried 3 differernt grades of oil, lifter free, engine flush all to no avail, hence the trip to the dealer, all done under new car warranty!,but i could tell with mine something wasnt right cos the noise sounded "deep",but it can be hard to pick the difference thats for sure, especially with the injectors ticking away!,she runs like a singer sewing machine now!

Cheers fellas, I'll try that penrite oil next, its coming up for an oil change so I'll dump some of that in. Last time I just used some castrol stuff not too sure.

Steevo - new short block at 45000 clicks? dang.......how hard did you thrash that poor car? :P

Yeah my noise, which, I can hear on almost all magna's, was only at cold (still get it sometimes on very cold starts, but goes away within 15 seconds). Once it hits the 'C' mark, engine feels good.

mine has a slight rattle on start up when its old as well and after about 2 seconds it goes away. My dads TF does the same + i has a wine sound to it

Ers,

I only had the the bloody thing for a week!,was owned by female mitsubishi worker that got layed off and had to work in the sticks, hence the magna got traded in and i picked her up,so it had a easy life, only, thing i test drove it form stone cold, never got to hear it hot and didnt expect such a low km engine to be rooted lol

I have had a rattly noise on start up a couple of times.

once a small part of my exhaust fell off and was ratteling around in there somewhere. But he welded it back in there.

2nd time my timing chain was getting to old and it had slap (VERY BAD!) and the tentioners were tentioned all the way in (or out maybe) and couldnt make the chain tighter.

that was at about 180,000 (second chain).

It took me a while but I remebered to get a video up on youtube.

I did an oil change the other day, put Castrol Magnatec 10W/40 in it and it was fine for a week or so and now the sound is back in the morning. I didn't got with the HPR 5 like some members advised as the car has 175,000km and a few mates advised me HPR5 would be too thin an oil for a car with that many Km's.

Anyhow to re-cap the car only makes this noise when its dead cold like in the morning or after work and feels rough as to drive, I try to keep it under 3000rpm till it reaches it normal operating temp. A short drive and the roughness and the noise go away and the car is smooth as to drive. Fuel efficiency is goin fine, did 570 to a full tank the other day and managed to keep it at a flat 10.0L/100Km.

First thing, Dont listen to mates, 99.8% of the time they have biased answers that wont help you, HPR5 is fine for the 6g74, hell im using it ever since i got the blower and motor runs smoother then ever.

Had the same sound in the 3.0L I had in the TF. Was a sticky lifter, replaced the lifter and no more noise. :P

You can always try a heavier weight oil.

Penrite make HPR30 http://www.penrite.com.au/html/s02_article/article_view.asp?id=102&nav_cat_id=127&nav_top_id=55

Personally, I think I'll stick to Penrite and Penzoil from now on. Dont care if it costs me an extra $10 each service :)

LOL at lifter rattle (damn i hate that noise)

Anyway im using Penzzoil Platinum 5W40 in both my magna and my MPS mazda, damn good oil especially for the DI turbo engine in the MPS.

I had the same problem, got cheap lifters from repco and replaced them all. Unfortunately Mitsubishi mechanics use thicker oil for some reason when the car goes for the first service. Sometimes they dont even change the oil lol. Therefore lifters give out first. I recommened to change them if you want your engine to last long and rev quick using thicker oil is a temporarly relief.
