water in the second cylinder, i can't drive it properly - it misfires constantly when driving, and is chewing through a couple of litres of water a week. I'm better fixing it, right?

Nope.
Lucifer and i both realised we wasted $1500 on these cars for no reason.
No point doing mate TBH, Yours is a carby aswell....Will be a great time to upgrade to at least an EFI model or V6..

Thats what i said and in the end ended up being a few hundred dollars more expensive, not to mention it took like 2 months.
unless you know what your doing, I mean actually know, not just wanting to give it a go, dont do this yourself, dont waste the money on a car worth $1300.

Trustttttt me been there done that. Wiser for the experience but yeah Its not something you wanna do, ESPECIALLY if things go pear shaped

Yeah, wish I hadn't wasted **** loads of cash getting the head replaced on my old TP.

Grab the service manual, take the head off, clean the block, put the new head on. The 4 cyls arn't that bad to work on, plenty of space and pretty simple.

Just litt things here and there, especialy if its your first time
Cost me like $700 for reco heads and $150 for a VRS kit, for some reason when we started it up, it blew out white smoke...
Sooo...off they came again!
put on another set of HG's (another $100) and for some reason it was peeing out coolant
DAMN IT, water tube in the valey of the V going into the water pump wasnt sealing properly, off comes in the intake...
What else, had a dodgey lebo mechanic do my heads aswell (this is why u stay with one mechanic) and he missed a bolt on the power steering pump bracket which meant i shredded PS belts, tok a while to figure that out.
Blew another HG cause he was a dodgey mofo so cost me another $300 to get fixed
+ had cam seals pop out, so odd $80 here and there to fix them

in the end what i paid for all that crap i should of just got my DOHc conversion fasttracked a bit more.

I spent ALOT of time doing this aswell as i was a real noob to this
also, timing belts are a pain in the ass, know how to do them before doing it, or else it will be trouble, trouble trouble, Ahhhhhh ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (potbelleyz song:P)

i was thinking of just organising a loan for 10k and getting a TJ2 VR-X, and giving the car to my lil brother for free and he can fix it and have it...but i just damn can't afford the debt.

I won't go into specifics but in my current financial situation i don't want to go getting in to more debt, and this is pretty much the only problem in an otherwise great-running car. only got 150k on the engine, had far too many things replaced and repaired in the last year to chuck in the towel and get a new car. I'm just biting the bullet and getting it done.
The mech who is doing it has been my best mate's family's mechanic for over 20 years, i do not have any doubts in him. and it's only costing me $1100.
Is there anything i should ask him to do while the head's apart, or is a reco'd head all i should leave it at?
At this stage ill have the car back tuesday.

Get an EFI conversion mate. Ask him to do that.
If the head is fine it'll just need to be shaved. Its probably fine man, Reco head, add another $350 onto the price :P

why the hell dont people do things themselves anymore??! Youre saying youre in debt but are so ready to throw away 1k. Mate, grab a gregorys manual, read up on it all and youll know how to do it. I didnt know how to do it until I actually did it! Head change is simple as hell. Also, im willing to bet that you can go your current head with a machine and itd work fine. A blown HG doesnt automatically mean a killed head. Do some homework before pissing money away.

Also, as for EFI, i have an inlet manifold that you can grab for $30. Im sick of it hanging around my place.

I bought my TS V6 for $1100, think about that.

The price of our cars is very low these days, probably less than what you would pay to have it fixed. Save some time an effort, just buy a new one and sell yours to someone/scrap/brother for a few hundred bucks.

There is no point getting sentimental about a carby 4. And if you are, ask around the vic section, I am sure some guys will hlp you out for a slab or something.

And my car cost me $800 in perfect running order.

Unfortunately i lead a busy life at the moment, if i'm not working i'm helping my old man put flooring and other bits and pieces in the new house we're building, or im out exercising or even having some me time. Regardless, i'm never available to do anything except for nights, and that's not the best time to work on cars. I won't attack something like a head gasket with my limited mechanical knowledge - even with a manual. I'll break something and it'll end up costing me more lol. I need it back on the road ASAP also, cause i work 30kms from my house and go to uni 45kms from my house - and public transport isnt an option.
Unfortunately, sometimes a mechanic is the best solution.

Can't afford a new car, as much as i would like one (even a cheap TR V6)..i know my car's history and its highly unlikely anything else major will go wrong with it in the near future - unlike buying something again..you buy all it's previous owner's actions, and inherit any problems the car may have. Considering i do over 35,000kms a year i can't risk that.
Thanks everyone for your responses.

P.S. like i said, i trust my mechanic - he has been a family friend of my best mate for years and i have been using him for 18 months. If he says the best course of action is to recondition the head, then the best course of action is to recondition the head.
