View Full Version : Replacement shocks after accident
The garage that are repairing my car have mentioned that they are only replacing one shock absorber after my accident. Does anyone see a problem with this, bearing in mind that a brand new shock absorber on the front drivers side will be paired with a used shock absorber (125,000km's old) on the passenger side?
The garage is probably meeting its minimum contractual obligations. However if it were my car I would be making sure that both dampers were changed. The same issue with springs.

Never ever change shocks individually, as it will ride wierd etc, any mechanic worth there salt will tell you this.

this happens when you go through insurance companies as they will only replace what was damaged in the acident.if you want the other side done you will have to pay for it.
I am so dissapointed. Picked the car up a little while ago, and it drives like absolute ****. I am not kidding, 1/4 turn from dead centre each way is completely numb, no steering feel at all. They DID only replace one shock absorber. I could already feel the car was not happy, little jolts here and there at 60kph going straight ahead, completely random. Dread to think what its like at highway speeds.
They didnt even replace the steering rack

Take it back and advise the insurance co that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Hopefully they will reasses it. If they cant fix it and have to keep throwing money at it they will write it off.
If they take this path find out what the salvage would be worth and buy it back and sort it yourself or dispose of it via other means eg wreck it or what ever.
Been there done that with a vehicle that was hail damaged after they repaired it the vehicles paint was shrinking and they did a shocking job re assembling it. At the end they wrote it off. Spewing in a way i should have bought it back off them since it only had 15k on the clock. Oh well mabey next time.
Hope they sort it for you either way.
Regards
Yeah I just called insurance company and told them it feels very odd to drive, and i dont feel confident driving it. They are going to get it re-assessed.

Well that's a start at least. Have you had a good look over the repaired area?
Check the steering rack, sway bar, control arm, shock tower. Compare everything to the other side.
Shall jack it up tonight and have a good look. I am pretty sure the steering rack was fubar'd with the way it tried to drive after the smash

get used to the term 'consequential loss' when it comes to insurance..
insurance companies only pay for what is damaged, IE one rim, one tyre, one shock, one brake rotor, etc etc.. if the other one isn't damaged, it will not be replaced by the insurance company, by all means if you would like to have it matching, and have 'pairs' replaced which would be 100% completley logical.. you would do so at your own cost, but they do not pay for items which are not damaged in that incident.
don't be to disenhartened my friend.. it should be clear as day in your Product Disclosure statement.. 99% of the population just think it's a book that they throw in the draw each year, where as in fact, when settleing claims everything included/excluded comes directly out of that exact same booklet.
P.S. - you should definitly pay that extra bit and get a matching new shock for the other side.. i wouldn't even hesitate about it
i might just get uprated all round if thats the case. only problem is the towing eyes on the front catch the driveway bad :( cant really risk going lower.
