AFAIK theres two ways, one is pull the heads off and do it that way, or you can slide them out of the gearbox side (very tight though) thats about all i know of from memory.

Not a bad way to do it,
Gives you a chance to do a top end engine rebuild while you're at it :)

how do u slide them out?
how do u slide them out?
Do a search, think theres a home-made tool you can use. I think any thing larger than Ralliart can't be slid in or out.

mmmm Only tool you use to undo the cam gears really is a long screwdriver and a 17mm socket.
The cams are held down with caps so they dont slide out.

i looked at the cam removal tool, it looks like
the special tool, from the workshop manual:
End yoke holder EMB990767 for Holding camshaft sprocket
when loosening bolt
so the cams can only be taken out by removing the heads?
i saw the workshop manual, and it says
Removal steps
1. Rocker cover
2. Rocker cover gasket
3. Oil seal
4. Camshaft oil seal
5. Rocker arm, rocker arm shaft
6. Rocker arm, rocker arm shaft
7. Rocker shaft spring
8. Rocker arm A
19. Rocker arm B
20. Rocker arm shaft
11. Lash adjuster
12. Rocker arm C
13. Rocker arm shaft
14. Lash adjuster
15. Thrust case
16. O-ring
17. Camshaft

anyone?
If thats what the manual says, then yeah, follow the steps.
Make sure you have a 3/8" or 1/4" torque wrench for the re-assembly too.
I know in V8's, changing cams is a simple matter of removing radiator, removing the belt, and sliding the things out, about 1hour of work.....
This is why, I wont own another FWD car again lol

I am no mechanic, but you can do it without removing heads. I have stage one cams in and the heads stayed on to fit them. Been 50000km no poblems

Cams do come out without taking of the heads, people who post that this is not so should try it before posting misleading information.
The cams can also be cracked by putting a breaker bar on the front pulley bolt and then crack the bolts, this is what I do. The Manual (gregorys) states that you can use a screw drive to hold them, the only time I have tried this I ended up with a cracked cam pulley.
Once your rocker gear and bits to the gear box side of the engine are off, they slide out. Take are that the lobes do not damage the bearing surfaces (they do not have bearings you can replace)

What can be done if the surface is damaged?
