Hey all,

I do plenty of driving (~50,000km each year) and the roads out my way are absolute crap, hence since buying my car a few things have gotten a bit sloppy over the last year.

There are a few things bugging me about my car at the moment that I'm pretty sure need to be fixed right away. Just wondering how much I should budget to get all of this done.

- CV Shafts/Joints (Right joint is rattling round corners and I'm pretty sure left shaft is gone as it makes a horrible noise whenever I hit bumps driving along) Both inner boots have rips in them. Do I need to replace both sides at once?

- Front Wheel Bearings Left one is a bit loose after coming out of a roundabout and hitting a kerb, these should both be done at the same time right? I was told by one mechanic it was $300 to fix these, but then told my a mate who is a mechanic that they are special ones because of ABS/V6 and it would be a $600 just for the bearings

- Left Tie Rod End Left one is also a bit loose after coming out of a roundabout

- ABS Sensor System needs inspection, left side one possibly needs to be replaced, something is wrong and it thinks my wheels are locked up all the time and so any time I brake it goes into ABS mode (so i have taken out the fuse for the ABS system)

- 200000km Service My engine has just passed 200000km, do I need to get the timing belt redone? What else should I expect do have done at this time?

- 4 New Tyres Front two are gone (down to the wear marks) and rubber is out of shape on one of the back ones, I want my smooth ride back so I'm gunna have to dish out for a new set, unless I can just put the fronts on the back for now. Anyway looking at Nankangs at $140 a corner I think my tyre guy quoted me.

- General Servicing I changed the oil & filter less than 5000km ago and the tranny has also been recently flushed. Brakes are also in good order, and were checked about 3 months ago when i has plugs & leads changed, is there anything else I should check?

I am hoping to get away with getting all of this done for under $2000, what do you guys think? Oh, and are there any parts that I can salvage from my other Verada or should I get everything new? (I'm thinking things like ABS sensor maybe I can scab off the old car)

you can swap over your cv's from the other car and i rember you saying that the engine was swaped over with another one, was the timing belt + water pump done at this time on the new engine?? if not you should get it done

also what is the size and profile of your tyres eg 234/45/R17 cause i seen bob jane had a speical on maxxis (waist for MAD35L to say something lol) for $120 a tyre

Ouch man, with that list I would be budgeting $2000-3000 (Timing belt alone is $600, Tyres about $600, Major service $350, dunno about the rest)

Thanks, thats a good point, ummmmm probably not as the mechanic who did it was pretty slack

I will speak to my new mechanic about pulling the CV's out of my other Verada, could be a good idea!

I think the tyres are 235/35/R17, I will call around about tyres and see how I go. They are the last thing I am going to do anyway, I don't want to run the risk of wearing out new tyres unnecessarily if my driving gear is buggered. I really like the Nankangs so I will probably stick with them

k cool just make sure the boots on the ones out of the other verada are not split, while there out of the car and they look a bit dodgey change them over

$3K? Hmmmm....Doubt it man.....Thats worth more then the car.
Timing belt would be the most expensive, for wheel bearings, well, ring up somewhere like SCA and ask, no use going off word of mouth..I know for the Non ABS they were about $50ea
Got any mates who can lend a hand?

Yeah, I mean I could do it, but after stuffing a few things up lately like ABS I am a bit skeptical. Apparently I need some sort of special press to get them in or out or something. I've done front bearings on an EA falcon before no sweat though

Checked the manual?
not too sure on that one, Could wait until Madmagna posts in here too, he sort of knows his stuff lol *joking*

everything else doesnt seem too technical, what about the timing belt, will you give that one a go yourself? alot easier doing 2 cams then 4 i assure you lol

Including labor if done professionally.

Hell I spent 1700 last time I had major work done (3 major oil leaks + timing belt) - Engine and gearbox both got pulled out and pulled apart.

Well if it was a rear main then yeah GB would of had to of come out.

Its $100 a side for the bearings from memory after calling repco/supercheap for prices, havn't read the manual re: changing them yet.

Honestly I don't have the time to do this work myself at the moment and I really need to get it all done as the left shaft (i think) is getting worse by the day, I might need to put it up on jacks and have a look at whats making the noise. I would rather have a mechanic to all of this work anyway because they will know exactly what to check and the best way to do everything, I don't want to damage things like I did when I lowered it (front struts fell out and ripped CV boots).

I barely have time to get my DIY tinting done, working 7 days and nights at the moment

if your working 7 day a week, **** doing it yourself, just pay someone to do it, thats why you work, to earn the money and pay the bills!

The front wheel bearings - you will more than likely be up for wheel hubs aswell.

If you wait until the bearings make noise, its quite possible they are damaging the wheel hub. Not replacing a damaged wheel hub and putting in a new bearing is pointless, you will just destroy the new bearing.

Which is why the mechanic told you it could be $600 for front wheel bearings, including hubs.

Btw - get that part fixed before driving the car again, I've had a wheel bearing let go before, it shattered, locked the front wheel and I lost brakes and steering control, luckily it was at 50km/h at midnight with no one around, you could easily end up in a head on collision killing someone.

Bearings are not gone, I know what gone bearings sound like, there is just a little bit of vertical movement in the left hub, presumably from hitting that gutter. Also there is some horizontal movement, according to my tyre guy, I should look at replacing the left tie rod end.

My experience with Wheel Bearings  I did something similar I did a 180 and hit the gutter with the front right wheel (who said front wheel drives can't oversteer), I had to buy the whole Hub because the old Pulsar was "with ABS", being a Jap spec SSS it could only be sourced from Ni$$an. $312 later just for the part....... hopefully you can source yours a lot cheaper then that! And you should be able to replace just one I did, and had the car for another 6 years without a drama.

I done exactly the same thing with my festiva.

Hit the kerb exiting a round about.

There was some movement, steering felt a little loose when turning left, bearing made no noise.

Decided to do a few quick left and right turns, and it let go.

If it feels loose, its gone.

On the plus side, it was the first time my mechanic saw a bearing disintegrate like that, the bearing was coming out of the hub, he could barely find any of it lol

Lol, nah it seriously isn't that bad (i hope), done alot of driving since then.

Will be cheaper to get rid of the XI then get that work done,

As the others said your more then likely up for a Hub as well, and the Magna ones are completely different and a lot more difficult then falcon ones due to the hub and knuckle assembly.

and as for your 2nd hand CV's if your paying someone to do it, why not put new ones in? will save having to redo them down the track (months maybe 1-2 years) compared to new (3-8 years).

When getting your timing belt done, get a gates kit, which will come with a new tensioner and also 2x cam seals and a Front main seal and get those done while you have it pulled apart, saves labour in the long run.

All up your probably looking at around 2k give or take for a decent mechanic to do the work.

- CV Shafts/Joints (Right joint is rattling round corners and I'm pretty sure left shaft is gone as it makes a horrible noise whenever I hit bumps driving along) Both inner boots have rips in them. Do I need to replace both sides at once?
.If you have a good set of shafts, give them a go first. If you get new ones get the ones with new outer joint and reco inner. They are not too expensive

- Front Wheel Bearings Left one is a bit loose after coming out of a roundabout and hitting a kerb, these should both be done at the same time right? I was told by one mechanic it was $300 to fix these, but then told my a mate who is a mechanic that they are special ones because of ABS/V6 and it would be a $600 just for the bearings
.Unlikely, get your lower ball joint checked first, more to the point check your lower control arm checked as the lower joint is known to come loose in the arm. The arm is a throw away item if this has happened

- Left Tie Rod End Left one is also a bit loose after coming out of a roundabout
.$30 bucks tops or grab the one of the spare care if it is ok

- ABS Sensor System needs inspection, left side one possibly needs to be replaced, something is wrong and it thinks my wheels are locked up all the time and so any time I brake it goes into ABS mode (so i have taken out the fuse for the ABS system)
.There may be 2 issues here, the sensor may be stuffed or the main modulator may have seen the end of its days. You will notice under the washer bottle a second brake fluid reserve, NEVER try and fill but when the fluid level gets to the low mark it is time for it to be replaced. Is a mongeral of a job and damned expensive.

- 200000km Service My engine has just passed 200000km, do I need to get the timing belt redone? What else should I expect do have done at this time?
.Old rule, if in doubt chuck it out, if you are sus about the belts age, get the full kit and get it done as will still be cheaper than doing the heads

Brakes are also in good order, and were checked about 3 months ago when i has plugs & leads changed, is there anything else I should check?
.Generally the 200k is all of the above but you should check all bushes, joints, adjust hadn brake, coolant change, fuel filter change, brake fluid change. This is classed as the "big service" and a full check over should be done

I am hoping to get away with getting all of this done for under $2000, what do you guys think? Oh, and are there any parts that I can salvage from my other Verada or should I get everything new? (I'm thinking things like ABS sensor maybe I can scab off the old car)
.Get everything you can off the spare car, after all that is why you have it? Pity you are not in Vic as I could help you out here lol

Well spoke to my mechanic this afternoon, and he thinks a max budget of $1500-$2000 to get all the mechanical work done is reasonable (including timing belt).

I'll take it round on Sat for him to have a look and should get it done next week, organized a car to borrow.

Fortunately my mechanic is a friend of the family and only lives 15 mins away he has a hoist at his place and owns a workshop in town. He works on my car at home, then drives it to work and back to make sure its working properly and if it isn't, gets the young blokes at the shop to do the work for him :D
