Ok, I've been getting some quotes on full sound systems for my TL recently. I went to complete car sound at enogra (QLD). I told him how much i wanted to spend on components and he offered a set up for me as follows.
Clarion VRX586USB - HU
Hertz HSK165 - 6in Splits
Hertz HCX690 - 6x9's
Polk MM 2124 12in - Subs x2
Audison SRX4 4ch Amp
Audison SRX1 Monoblock
When he showed me all of this working in unison i was quite happy. I have talked to a few people and each of them had a problem with a different one of the brands. As i'm fairly new to the car sound and all, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if they have had any problems with any of these brands. Also does anyone know what the tuning is like on the HU if they have one? I was happy with this set up and if i dont hear anything bad from anyone that has owned any of these i wont be changing it to please other people. I just want to know if anyone has had any bad experiences with these brands or specific parts. Also if you have had really good experiences too.
Thanks guys.

Those are all quality brands. People will have trouble with any product. Im sure theres people who've had problems with Ferrari.
I'd be happy with that setup.

The funny thing is one of them is an auto elec, and he was bitching the other week about having to do work on a Ferrari Testarossa. :bowrofl:
All good brands.
Personally I would pick other brands for some things, like subs, but, thats the great thing about car audio - plenty of choice for everyone.
If you're happy with the set up, screw everyone elses opinion :)

I have been propasitioned with getting an alpine focal and eclipse set up too. And my mate reckons he can do a custom install for me. I think he's coming over this arv so we can shoot through some ideas. I may have to traul through the rest of car audio for ideas. or come up with something completely original. :P
Fair enough,
As long as you listen to this set up aswell, back to back with the one you picked.
There's always something better, something more expensive - just remember to set money aside for things like:
Wiring
RCA's
Distribution block
Sound deadening
MDF
Carpet
Half my set up is just that, the set up....

yup, it is all good stuff.....BUT - i do know for a fact that you can get better speakers for what the Focal's are worth.....
Like Audison - Focal is a specialist brand - so you pay lots of money for everyday quality - it's not until you spend heaps on Focal will you get truly great sounding speakers.....
I'd choose Alpine TypeX Reference over those focal splits - the rears I cannot comment on....
next question really is what do you want out of your subs......do you want nice tight bass - or just loud bass, are you after sound quality or sound pressure?.......this will detirmine your best choice of sub and enclosure.....
one really good 12in sub is generally better than 2 reasonable subs....

I'm looking at good quality and quick tight bass. I listen to alot of heavy metal and quick bass. so i want it to be able to keep up and sound good. Type X reference, do Northfield stock those?

IMO:
*Stay clear of Alpine for speakers - perhaps look into a deck though.
*Audisons are great amps, I'm running the SRx2 and SRx2s. They do get hot.
*Good choice for sub but definately look around before you decide.
*For Heavy metal, stick with the Hertz splits. I have some HSK's in my run about with 80W, loud and produce a lot of mid bass with correct installation. Next best are Bostons or Morel.
*Get off your bum and go have a really good listen.
If you listen to heavy metal I would have gone with something you like you first mentioned for a system set up, perhaps with a different sub and maybe replacing the SRx1 with a SRx2s.

Ive been installing and running systems myself and for friends for the past 10yrs, in the end it comes down to three things -
*What your ears tell you is good, doesnt matter how much we tell you what is good, the best judge is YOUR ears.
*Install and cable quality, the better the install, incl deadening cable and enclosure quality the better, dont skimp on this. Ie a set of acoustic foam tiles mounted behind the driver, from Jaycar @ $25 will make your splits woofer come alive!
*Quality of the source music you audition with, when you go to check out gear, take the media you normally listen to, Ie Ipod, CDs made from home stored mp3s, DVDs etc.
As a general rule ive found for certain gear, certain companies do better, some worse....
H/U - Elcipse/Alpine(personal fave for decks)/Nakamichi
Amps - Audison/Tru Tech/PG/Old School Alpine
Subs - Alpine Type R(great bang for buck)/Vibe/Digital Designs/Xtant/Boston
Splits/Coax - Def NOT Alpine/Focal(my personal no 1 choice(but pricey, polyglass or KP series)/Hertz/Morel/Oz Audio/Vibes
But as I said, comes down to what sounds sweet to your ears, take our recommendations, and listen to as many brands as you can find/afford. Then you will be happiest. Dont be too afraid of buying looked after 2nd hand gear, ive built +$5k systems before for about $2k doing this.
Last tip, go out find what you want then talk to Marty @ FHRX and see what he thinks and can do for you, top guy, unbelievable knowledge and skills.

Marty is in sydney, he also does mail order for gear, dont be afraid to give an install yourself a go, plenty of knowledge on the forums to give you advice etc. Remember my first serious try, close to $5k worth of gear, but when I 'd finished, damn might as well have been a $20k system.
Marty = Here (http://www.fhrxstudios.com.au/)
very sweet = the setup youve been recommended. cant go wrong with it really.

Nothing wrong with that setup at all, all good brands. The onyl thing I would consider changing is the headunit to something like Alpine or Eclipse.
