That sounds like there is no oil..

How long does it do it for..???

How long have you have the car and when did it start..??

Also that dude had a comment there saying it was timming belt tensioner..

Timing tensioner, mine does the same thing sometimes...

With some searching I have found this, but this was in the first gen Magna forum, does it sound right ? :

There are two chains in there, the one your hearing is the timing chain rattle, and that is normal to hear at start up while the oil pressure rises to tension up the timing chain. if the rattle remains after start up, it either means the tensioner has worn down, requiring you to replace the chains and guides, or the balence chain guide needs adjustment, if on adjusting it you find it wont go any further, your either pushing the wrong way, or the guide has worn down to metal, and thus the chains and guides also need to be replaced. The balence chain sound is a little diffrent from the timing chain sound in that it sounds more like someone battering the bottom of a saucepan with a wooden spoon when it wears down to metal.

you will find its not your timing chain but your balance chain is streched & the guides are worn

All 3rd gen V6's run a timing belt rather than a chain.

Sounds like tensioner to me as well. Get this looked at ASAP. Lose the tensioner and its top-end rebuild time...

Tensioners make it rattle alright. Mine started at around 50,000 kms and kept doing it until I changed the belt at 103,000 kms. Mine started rattling as soon as it started up, but would go away if I turned the engine off then restarted it. The tensioner is hydraulic, but not run off the engine oil pressure or anything like that - its self contained.
I never let the engine continue running with the rattle, I would always stop and restart. It seemed that the tensioner couldn't maintain belt tension overnight. I checked the belt tension a couple of times when engine was cold - first thing in morning and then after being restarted .It was obvious that the tensioner wasn't holding the tension overnight by how slack the belt was but it must not have been completely stuffed because after restart the belt was always tight.
I wouldn't recommend leaving it 50,000 kms if the rattle never goes away.

Dont stress over it too much though, Im 14 months and 30,000km down the track with a rooted tensioner. Ill worry about it next time the belt comes off or if I have to take the car to a mechanic one day....

Yep rattling goes away if i restart the car immediately too, but dont know what effect that would have on the life of starter motor etc.
So what were the things you had to replace ? I am going to ultra tune and dont want to get ripped off

Looks as though I have a time chain rattle in my TR 1991 SE .... anyone know an approx cost.

I just got off the phone with K-Mart (not that I'll be going through them they quoted the following)

$175 basic timing kit
$475 Basic timing kit plus pulleys etc

Labour $600

Cost $775 - $1000

Madmagna had this to say .....in another thread

Although fiddly the entire job can be done with the engine in the car without any problems. You will need to remove the LH mount, lift the engine up a bit to remove the bolts that hold the bracket on the front of the engine on, from there it is not hard, remove the 4 bolts that hold the air con compressor on ( do not undo pipework) remove sump, rocker cover, harmonic balancer, timing cover etc, ( not in this order ).

What would likely labour be then ?
Be careful when you put the timing cover back on as the front of the head gasket, which only seals oil, be sure to put a bit of sealant on this area

mine has the same problem, it annoys the **** out of me
i had it in for a major service and the guy checked it out and said its a common problem in magnas (as you can see from the thread) and basically not to worry about it and if it annoys me that much it'll be $750 on mates rates
if there is an easier and cheaper fix that arrises, i'll be taking that safe to say, bloody annoying

VRX has done it twice since ive owned it. both times starting the car up in the morning in between 0-5 degrees. turn car off, start again and its fine. scared the living crap out of me tho! 180k service coming up in 10,000km, timing getting done then so it should be right :)

hmm he said mine goes away after a cold start, but i swear i can still always hear it
i'll have to check it out, its definately not a case of turn off and restart.

yeh, i'd be interested to hear how you go. I was pretty unlucky with my car I think, I've never had a tensioner fail before a belt was due to be changed. The cars done 125,000kms now and there has been no reoccurrence of the noise since I had the tensioner fixed. With my car one Mitsi dealer had diagnosed it correctly but another denied there was anything wrong with the car, funny thing at that dealer they had a 380 which had thrown a belt - the 380 engine uses the same belt etc as the Magna.
