Hey there people im looking for some advice on how to sort out a a noise i have coming from the left rear wheel of my TJ VRX. Start of the year my mate who owns a workshop serviced my car, tightened up the handbrake as it was loose, there was no probs after this service. 3 months ago he serviced it again then the problems started.
When i came to a stop, seemed more prominent on inclines i got a scrubbing noise coming from the left rear, also happened a lot in carparks. I took it back to him he said just the handbrake is too tight, "fixed" it for me on the spot.
Last couple of weeks i noticed the noise again. I took the car back again and they "fixed" it on Friday. I was told by one of the mechanics this is a very common problem on Magnas, where as my mate the owner said he never heard of it before . Then yesterday, the noise is worse than ever. Any advice i can give him to fix it as they seem incapable of doing it themselves. Anyone else had this problem? Or could it be something apart from the handbrake?
Cheers
Timmy

Check that it's not a problem N/A to the hand brake.

what type of noise is it?
can you describe it?
its not a scraping/squelling noise at a low speed is it?
if so it'll be warped handbrake drums/discs on the rear
mines got this problem too, got it fixed under warranty but about a week later it returned :doubt:

Its a scrubbing noise of sorts, its rotational as in its not a constant noise unless im going really slow through a car park or right about to stop coming up to a set of lights, stop sign etc. Probably more rubbing, was told by the mechanic (sorry im not mech minded) its when the handbrake is released the part of it that stops the car at the rear gets rubbed on by something cant remember what he said, and that theres nothing that can be done its design fault. Which is crap cos it didnt make the noise when i got it.
It shouldnt be the brakes they got fixed couple months ago. New pads and discs machined i think, again my poor mech knowledge.

Pretty sure mine does a similar thing. I tightened up my handbrake a bit using the adjustment in the centre console and that would be about the same time the noise started.

Centre console adjustment IS NOT for adjusting the handbrake, it is there to take up the slack in the cables
To adjust properly, back off the cable, adjust the rear handbrake drums, take up the slack again, make sure the wheels still turn freely and you are all done.
Properly maintained, Magna's have no issues with the handbrake
You may be getting noise from your pads also, get them cleaned and have anti squeal applied to the pads

could always rasie the rear of the car up so you can spin your tyre freely
i tried this and could hear the disc rubbing somewhere, so looks like my discs are warped again :doubt:

I had a similar issue in my old TE. The handbrake mechanism contains a pin of some kind which, because of the design of the mechanism, slighly dislodges and pushes the tips of the handbrake shoes onto the inside of the rear discs.
When the car slows sown, you can here a grinding noise, similar to someone attacking metal with sandpaper. In the worst case (my car), it will squeal every time the car slowed.
The above description was the mitsubishi service managers description to me as my car went in 6 times to have the assembly replaced due to this problem. They also said this was extremely common to 3rd gen Magnas.
In the end they replaced the assembly with onethey said "was not from the earlier manufacturing batches". And then, Problem solvered!

yea mine makes a kind of pulsing rubbing (sounds like 'shh') noise that varies depending on my speed, I got it 'fixed' too when I got my car serviced last, but alas it's returned! It only does it every now and then, but I find that if I just slightly pull the handbreak lever up, (but not enough for it to actually engauge the handbrake properly) and put it down again, it makes it go away. it's weird!

you can chamfer the beginning and end of the handbrake shoes
