As titles says....
Looking at buying a (sedan) '04, 2.0ltr, 33,000 k's, $9500 Lancer.
1. Were these any good & what are some things to look out for?
2. The specs say for towing - 400kg un-braked, 1000kg braked.
Do you think it would handle towing a standard (un-braked) 6x4 trailer with a 12' tinny?
3. What's that check you do on if a car is legit, and what info from the car do I need to check it?
Any advice is appreciated, because the car is 4 1/2 hrs drive away & I'd hate to be wasting my time!
TYI

This is the CH model yes? looks like the TL's little brother?
My good friend has one. he has not had an issue with it as yet and has had it for about 50K.
All I can say is, Try and get the MIVEC, The standard SOHC 2L is as gutless as hell. My TR would crap on it (which is saying something when its 11 years older) the MIVEC's go great.
Thats all i can contribute to this...

I will contribute you can do a REVS check online. It takes about 10 mins and costs I think $30. You will need the vehicles VIN.

LOL
Not too sure how to tell, I know the MIVEC one has badges on the side
And the 2L SOHC engine looks almost the same as the 2.4L found in the 3rd gens
Standard SOHC

MIVEC:
Cant find a picture but doesnt look like that.
VRX also came with rear disc's (standard rear drum) and 5 stud hubs (standard 4 stud) aswell as leather wrapped steering wheel, handbrake lever, and very cool instrument panel (white faced dials backlit with red LED's) not to mention the subtle but sporty bodykit
Bit out of your pricerange but yeah

The newer CH's (with the 2.4l Mivec) come 5 stud and also disc alround even the pov packs, they go really well, (old girl has one in manual) only issue we have had with it is for some reason its chewing front LH tyres every 8,000km, however Mitsi are replacing the entire front end this week under warranty.
The late 05/06 tend to go for 10-13k depending on the k's, but very nice and reliable car.

even if u go the 2L they do go ok towing.
my mate has a manual 2L vrx and he regularly tows a trailer with 1-3 motos on. each bike weighs around 120kg. does sometimes struggle up hills, but goes ok.
i agree, go for the mivec though. another mate has one, and it out-performs the vrx 2L big time!

I had a 03 2L VRX.. was a faultless car, never had a problem with it.. also worked at a mitsu dealership at the time and everyone there reckons the CH lancers (either 2L or 2.4L) and the 2.4L outlanders (the first shape - had the same engine) were bulletproof..
Crap power though.. havent got much go in them at all but really good on fuel..
I never had a tow bar on mine, and personally wouldnt try towing with one but thats just my opinion..
also, AFAIK, there were no 'major' issues with them as any build issues would of been sorted out when the CH was released (as it was the same as the CG, just face-lifted..)

Yep, Really good on fuel - like 15 Km per L on the open road.
CH lancer 2L manual - engine likes a bit of revs. Up to 3,000 is ok for gentle city driving, above that it really flies. Engine is very smooth, will sit on 60KPH in 5th gear with no complaints. Bought one new in '04. Wife's car - $20K with mags and spoiler, no on road costs. I find it better to drive than any Magna I have owned. Not a single problem. Haven't tried towing with it though. Be warned though - if you have a big butt the seats get uncomfortable on a long trip.

Photo above is the plain 2L engine, no mivec. It has more KW than a 2.6L magna engine and is smoother to drive.

Apples to oranges really, I would of hoped in the 10 years between the Asstron II and this 2L there would of been some improvement!lol
