everyone seems to think you dont need to, but the longer it takes me to find cams, the closer i come to buying rods too

You could probably get away with not buying rods, but you're building your entire engine and leaving one part untouched. It'll cost more money to replace dead rods than it will to install them now while you're doing the rest of the engine. Seems silly to me to build everything else and leave the rods stock.

just rang repco, theyll take the gasket kit back with full refund and chase up what im after.

on rods, id like to get them, are any brands better than others?

May i ask what the weakness is with the standard rods?
All I know is cranks are good for over 500HP+
(3L DOHC ones are good for 1000HP stock)

Chaddy74
02-12-2008, 03:28 PM
Chase up a full gasket kit called Durapro they have the metal gasket which happens to be the exact same part number that Mitsi claims as genuine..... so basically it comes from the same factory! Again I have some Genuine HG available PM me and I will do ya the deal of a lifetime !

guys are getting over 500hp with standard rods in offroaders, BUT im sure these guys are pulling their engines down regularly. i dont have the coin for that.

id be interested to hear if anyone is pulling big hp on standard rods

It's your engine at the end of the day, but if you can't see that doing rods now and being safe, rather than taking a risk and leaving them as they "may" be fine isn't a HUGE risk... then I dunno what to tell you.

The stock rods are good for a 500hp build up BUT the do need to have ARP or similar rod bolts fitted to them (the stock bolts are crapola), also pays to get the rods shotpenned as well and make sure you get a good balance job done on the whole crank, rods/pistons and flywheel assembly.

As a note the old 400+ HP @ flywheel 3.5L engine that i built is still going strong (for over 2yrs now) in a off road racer and it HASNT been pulled to bits every few meetings and that thing gets revved to nearly 8000rpm all the time. The guy is over the moon at how well the thing is lasting compared to his old set up (which was a 3.0L 12valve V6)

Where do you get the ARP bolts from? i tried off rocket industries but couldn't get any to January so had to pull stock ones back in. Looking to upgrade them sometime though

I just grabbed mine from my local engine performance shop as he was doing a big order for a heap of speedway chev engine parts, so i got my rod bolts thrown in on that order and for a good price.

Be advised that to fit the ARP rod bolts (part number 107-6004) into our rods the "caps" have to be relieved/spotfaced approximately 1.5-2mm to allow for enough thread to come thru so the nuts will have 2 threads hanging out. (hope that makes sense)

Its a pity that ARP dont make our rod bolts in the ARP2000 pro series but the hi performance 8740 that we can get are still good and much better than the stock crap.

I have a new set that I probably won't ever need if you're interested.

on the rods question, there's talk of shot-peened stock rods being good to 500hp, but that's mostly from someone who no longer runs stock rods in their 500+hp Magna.

I have Pauter 4340 rods in mine. very strong, but very heavy. the guy who built the engine was worried about the thickness (or lack thereof) across the mid section of the stock rods. he reckoned they would either bend on compression (and end up looking like an S) or snap at full throw with high revs. I went the safer route and found some rods that aren't going to break... ever!

cheers,
.wook

Ok so i take it that it isn't possible to just remove the sump and fit these bolts then?

i ordered argo rods today

i just need some information from someone that knows more than me.

1 what is the clearance from the bottom of the cylinder bore to the rod beam of the standard rod?

2 are there any clearance issues on the extremeities of the conrod in its rotational movement, if so, in which position of the conrod?

jasonsvrx im lookin at you lol
