View Full Version : New Cat?
Having extractors fitted shortly and was going to fit a new cat.
Am thinking of Magnaflow 3" metal core 200 cell per squ." $195. Any reasons why I should'nt get this?

Get a 3" flex pipe fitted aswell, otherwise your stuck with the 2.25" stocko one and it will eat away alot of the power gains.

don't blast me for this (but i dont want to start a new thread) but at what stage does replacing the cat improve performance (noticeably) ....... after headers and a catback are put in ..... replacing the cat next logical step?

well if you mean what gains are to be had from changing the stock cat to a 3inch cat, then many.
If you mean changing a cat to a new same dimension cat, this is only done when the old one is clogged or collapsed from age and or overheating/ overfuelling.

This is for NA? if so 3inch is too big 2.5 is fine for NA up to 200ish killerwasps 3inch and you can lose some bottom end as you will reduced the required backpressure for low rpm
Was gonna keep it 2.5" after the cat, Magna00.

Keep the flexi at 2.5inch then cannot see the point in going 3inch in that particular section it wont net anything, and you will probably lose some backpressure if you go 3inch which can effect the lower end of the rpm range. And your not going FI in the very near future

I am not so sure about this. I had a 2.5 cat put on my car and it was a restriction in my system. could even be felt at the exhaust of the car feeling the air squeeze out of the muffler. Put a 3" on and the exhaust is flowing more freely and not pushing fast out the back.
Bear in mind the factory cat flows very well for a stock item, and I was recommended by an exhaust dealer not to put the 2.5 on as the factory one is very good. I didnt listen but should have.

Yeah 3inch Cat is fine, people were talking inch flexpipe which i said keep it at 2.5inch, ive been told as a general rule the cat should be .5inch larger then the piping on the system to eliminate any flow restrictions etc.
A killer system for NA build would be Pacemakers/Hurricanes, 2.5inch flexi, 3inch cat, 2.5inch mandrel with rear box of choice.
O.K. I'll start shopping.

How much should it cost for a 2.5" flex pipe to be welded on? Gonna get it done when I get my catback done.

Probably around 200 give or take, labourwise its pretty simple, oxy off old one, tidy up any slag place new on end of cat, reweld on, start car and check to leaks and done. Parts will probably cost more then the labour
