Comming home, 1 minuet from my house i managed to go round a corner and as i was going round, a car was comming the other way and ive slightly swerved towards the left side of the lane and clipped the drain with my front left wheel (just my luck  ).

Picture isnt great:

But pretty much its mashed bout 1inch chip out of my rims (which im not that worried bout), but what I AM WORRIED about is that it cut into the tire bout 2 or 3mm deep, bout inch wide.

My question is, will driving on this tyre cause i blow out? or should i be right for a while?

Cheers. JM

Factor in a wheel alignment too.

the wheel wall supports all the pressure being placed on the tyre. Any damage to the wall of a tyre should not be used.

I did the exact same thing about 2 months ago, tore the rubber off the sidewall down to the mesh in a patch the size of a 50c piece.

Drove around on it for about 6 weeks until rego place told me I need new tyres cos mine were almost bald.

I wouldnt worry about it myself, but then again I dont care about much.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS PERSON!

It is extremely dangerous to drive on a tyre like that, its an instant defect and it WILL blow out.

cheers guys, mixed thoughts about it from the sounds of it. got my mobile mechanic guy to come round after i got stuck halfway putting the stocky on. but he reckons its not too bad, as long as i dont drive like a P plater i should be right, he said just check it everyday, if bubbles start appearing, change it immediatly.

He also just got an angle grinder and smoothed out the rim too, so its a pretty good fix for the moment. saves getting a newy. now that i look at the pic, it probs looks a little worse than what it is.

But they show the damage/solution a bit better.

Cheers. JM

Its hard to tell how deep exactly with that photo, 2mm isnt much in the scheme of things, if its gone to the ribbing then yeah replace asap, otherwise yeah.

A good wheel alignment place should also show if you damaged any suspension parts.

It's hard to tell in the photos, but it looks like its just a chunk taken out from the rim protector. The rim protecter is just a hard band of rubber that sticks out to prevent the wheel from getting damaged (from minor impacts!), and hence is quite vunerable to get chunks ripped off. My tyres had a few like that, never had any problems. If you imagine where the rim protector is, then if it seems to go deeper than the rest of the sidewall it might be worth replacing it, otherwise personally, I would keep an eye on it but not bother too much.

It dont look that bad from the above Pics, But I would put it on the back if you are worried, and if you are really worried, then replace it.. The first pic looks real bad, though, probably just the shadows. I driven on worse, and until the set tyres needed replacing.

But there usually a lot of rubber there designed to take that kind of impact, and the tyre wall strength is from the inside. If the tyre wall was comprimised you would have 'pinched' the tyre, causing a immediate blowout by way way of a horizontal split. I'd still put it on the back end of your car and make sure your spare is serviceable.

And if you think your tyre walls are knackered, Look (http://www.planetenjoy.com/technology/1077_radical-new-tire-design-by-michelin-the-next-generation-of-tires) at this.

OMG some wimps in here!!!!

That is fine to drive on. Looks like you have only cut into the surface.

Just don't leave it for too long and get it replaced as soon as you can. ;)

Welcome to the new AMC... Home of Wimps and Soft ****s

i was thinking the same thing, whack it on the back. That way has less load on it. Get it replaced when you can afford it.

Harden up ladies, tyre will be fine, hell I drove 800km in a day with a nail in my tyre and a piece out of the rear sidewall exactly like that, you'll be fine. As suggested before, swap to the back.

Thats nothing compared to what mine looks like!
Mine is still fine to drive on, and it's been like that for well over 1000ks

As long as there is no steel belt showing you will be fine till you replace it.
Like others have said, put it on the rear, less weight and not put under any additional stress like turning and driving at the same time.
