This is another nice ( rice...cough, rice...cough) project I'm planning to do this week. Yeah, totally aesthetics but in some extent will lower the cabin temperature during summer.
My plan is to produce a carbon fiber skin which will be stick on top of the roof using an adhesive (sikaflex).
I'm sure some won't like this idea and to some might love it. No need to say that this is a rice mod because sure it islol
The mould should be ready before the end of the coming week. This is exciting....for me atleast:nuts:

I hope your not talking about the sikaflex you buy from a tube in bunnings lol
And I get called a ricer Gosh!
Nar...idea will be good for summer..
Do they make CF in a big enough sheet with a self adhering backing to it? You dont want it so sticky as to lift off the paint after a few years eh
For a rice mod that dont look too bad......
Though, in all honesty - will this suit a magna? Will be interesting to see.
(rumours are tufftr will do this to every panel)

Sikaflex from Bunnings??? could be, as long as it will do the job.
I have 50"width x 10metres long of real carbon fibre and a gallon of epoxy resin:badgrin:
This is the vaccum pump I rigged and the test I'm doing at the moment.

great idea, but my concern is getting it to blend with the roof at the edges. How will you do that?
Sounds like a lot of money for that "look". You can buy stick on stuff for that effect.

I checked my car's roof and I see no issue with it. Is that the windscreen area?

Are you going for a permanent effect or removable?

Removable.
The price won't be too expensive, I think it's like a price of re-spraying your roof.

Hahaha i been thinking of doing this for a while not at the level of carbon fibre though, only as i have no skills in that area at all. I am more planning to just get my roof covered in black vinyl the same used in car skins, just plain gloss black but with xmas its on my back burners. Cant wait to see how yours turns out Magtech!!

Any updates on this mate?
None yet:redface: My issue is the moisture that will be trapped in between the roof and the skin, sure that is not good...that is if I do it removable. Still thinking

it would be cheaper to get a sticker company to mould on a CF sticker onto the roof. would take less than 15 minutes and the costs would be very small as well

just an FYI, Sikaflex isn't going to do what you want. Polyurethane, in a cartridge, won't work as it needs a minimum of 1 to 2mm of depth to gain the bond strength and would more than likely destroy your CF if you tried to take it off. There are other Sika products that will do it, such as the adhesives kitchen manufacturers use to bond laminates etc to cabinet doors, these are contact adhesives but again, won't give you the ability to remove the CF.
If you want something that will do the job, on a permanent basis, give me a call on the number below and I see what I can sort for you;
Sika Australia, SA branch
08 8162 9055
(note to Mods, this is the business number, given out freely to anyone who wishes to ask technical advice regarding the best Sika product for a specific application)
Cheers,
Adam
contact adhesives wont take the heat of being exposed to the sun under CF all day, it will lift.

true, you looking at a limited temp range, but it is higher than polyurethanes which top out at around 80 degrees Celsius, constant exposure. The urethanes seem to cope quite well, used quite extensively to panel bond the aluminium sheets on to trailers, horse floats etc without any mechanical fixings.
I will check with the technical nobs on Monday, see if we got anything here in Oz that will do the job.

how hot is that M3?
Will look good on a magna, depending on your colour, and rest of car's theme.
