View Full Version : vibration, when in drive but stopped at lights
just wondering if anyone else's car does this,
idle seems normal when its going down the road, but once i stop at lights or stop sign, theres vibration and what seems like an irregular idle. if i pop it into neutral, it goes away, idle's higher and no vibration?????
anyone know the cause of this? is it something simple?
is it a sign of something really bad?
thanks

In drive you will notice some vibration but if its alot then your engine mounts will be shot.
Also with being an auto your revs could be to low to begin with. I have mine just on 1000 when in Park and warmed up. So in gear its like 750 -800 and there is no vibration.
I need new engine mounts soon cos when I have AC on the revs drop a bit and I get bad vibrations through the car. So im always putting it into N at the lights but in reverse with AC on its smooth as. Thats because my engine mounts are shot also.

Yeah I have the same thing with mine. It's most likely your engine mounts shot as most of them are on these cars considering age and all. It wont cause any immediate damage, and you'll prob be fine driving it foe ages, but over the longer term it can do a bit of damage. Good ol' N at the traffic lights haha :P

recheck the fluid level in the auto when hot
should be between both marks on the dipstick

My TR does the same thing, and the same with the aircon too as said in post 2
i think its an ongoing thing throughout all magnas for some reason and i dont think a full conclusion was ever found to it

If its not smooth idle in gear stopped its a solenoid that has something to do with the gearbox. An old TP had this problem.
A/C shouldn't cause revs to drop when you turn it on, there should be a vacuum switch somewhere that needs to be connected. Fixed this issue on my current carby with A/C. Now never better.
i had checked the auto fluid level, was between the lines, a lil on the hi side though.
was thinking of draining the auto fluid and replacing it, but how the hell would you pour more fluid down in there. do they make a super long funnel?
well i got the car stored at my mates now,
i was wondering about insurance, back home i can get just fire and theft for a few bucks a month, but have called a few companies here and they won't do just fire and theft? my mates shed would be a bigger loss than my car. but i always have it on my car at home when i'm away.
anyone know of a company that will do just fire and theft?
thanks

the level is ok no need to empty any
to add the oil
I use a small funnel shoved into the top end of a length of garden hose
to fill the auto through the dipstick hole
