View Full Version : 380VRX Burning . . .
. . Oil that is.
Its a 2005 its about 2,000 kays away from its 45k service and the oil is halfway down on the dipstick.
It did the same thing half way through the service interval and they (dealer) changed the type of oil that they put in with the hope that it would stop burning it.
Does anyone else have a 380 that burns a bit of oil? Is it of great concern? What should i do?

If its under warranty hassle the dealer to put it on a consumption test and escelate the issue to Mitsubishi.
Might be wise to find out how much oil consumption is acceptable to them in between services...

Hey Mate
Any oil sealing ring that hasnt "seated" by them Km`s never will IMO,id be taking it up with the daeler, seems excessive, and dont let them put in thicker oil than recommended, only masking the problem
Steve
Damn . . I have a feeling this is going to be a pain in the **** . . Will take it in tomorrow and see what they have to say.
How much oil does a drop of 1/2 on the dipstick actually equate to?
If you mean halfway down between 'low' and 'full' probably around 500ml (usually the difference between full and low is 1lt.....380 people can correct me here).
A car should not use any oil, unless you have done 300000km. Something is wrong.

If you leave that cheap oil that mitsi use, in for 15k, then it doesnt suprise me it's burning.
change it every 5k and i bet you won't notice it anymore

or own a rotary.. :P
on a serious note though, the oil level should NOT move on the dipstick between regular log book servicing.. Take it back..

That is definitely excessive oil consumption for the kms done. Somehting is wrong there. Demand they do an oil consumption test.
P.S.....serves you right for transplanting an LS1 engine into the 380.....very sneeky :bowrofl:
Hey guys,
Haven't been able to check the forums so haven't been able to give an update on this issue.
Went and saw that dealer, they said its nothing to worry about (what a surprise) that they will try a different oil next service (blah blah), that its within the 'mitsubishi consumption figures' (which is like 500ml per 1000km) and that I have a 10 year warranty on it anyways. I guess they make a fair point on the last one, but the rest is a bit of a cop out.
Would the US intake affect the oil consumption at all?

Only just read this...
No I can't imagine the Galant intake affecting oil consumption (fuel consumption, maybe).
While I'm here, I too have an oil question for 380 owners... Do you guys leave the dealer's oil in the engine for the duration of the 15,000km services? Or change it sometime in between? Personally I don't touch it and just leave it for the next service checkup... but I never noticed it burning extra oil either.

Its a well known fact that 7500 km oil changes really reward the 3.5l, Most average Joe's would service at 15000 k's though.
But I'm sure it's in the manual, for city driving, or towing, service every 7500km's.
Makes sense really. City driving is 2000 RPM for 50km per hour, or Highway 2000 RPM for double that distance. So city driving puts the motor through the same work hours for half the distance.

Mine doesnt use any oil between changes. I have now started replacing the oil & filter at 7500km as the majority of my driving is stop/start & I thought 15000km's was too much for the oil under those conditions. I bought the oil & filter from Mitsubishi & I think it cost about $45 for both which isnt too bad.

Er... ok well I just get mine changed every 15k. But I spose mine does mostly hwy driving so that's ok according to Sh00t.
When I had my Verada it reached 248 000k with just the standard 15k oil changes and wasn't burning much oil. Maybe 200-400ml between changes. That was mostly city driving.

Er Yep, Knotched that's OK then:)
That said, the guys that service every 7,500, get really high K (350,000+) from their engines. I wouldn't expect them to drive like my Granma.

Thank you Dr Sh00t.
My Verada might have made it a lot higher too except my two young cousins (18/17) wrote it off when I sold it to their father
i don't think I'd be keeping a car til 350K unless it was something really unusual/irreplaceable. I'd like to get a 350Z next but I'll probably have it snatched away by some new Green/Climate change/anti terrorist doctrine before I even test drive one.
I'll just have to wait for my 1000nm electric coupe :2cool:
PS: Why don't you polish your inlet manifold - it's looking a little dull...:D

I was reading some threads in the Members Lounge area... and guys there are talking about missing oil changes for 25,000kms and over 50,000kms! I definately feel better about my 15,000 now - which is also mostly motorway driving.

Oil changes are over rated, My TE diamante wagon has done 320000km and still gos well. This car gets an oil change once a year if she is lucky. Its a manual and gets driven very hard, To be honest im surprised she still goes as good as she does:shock:

Probably gonna get shot down, but I have read a couple of articles criticising the 6G75 motor for the fact that a significant percentage of units fitted to the 380s had an oil burning problem from new and that mitsubishi are aware of it.
I will try and find the articles..............

That about sums that up.
You sound like the type that wont gun a cold motor though.
I can just imagine what it would be like if you did change her oil often. It's just Physics. Taken from the Shawshank redemption, ' Its just time and friction '
