hey, i bought a pair of subs in a box.
US-Audio.
i bought them 2nd hand, so they didnt have a box,and i dont know the specs.
all i know is each one has its own speaker jack in the back.. they cant be piggybacked... they both run independantly.
im hoping to get an amp before xmas... was wondering what i need to go for. im assuming a 2 cahnnel amp would do?
how many watts would one assume??? they are 12 inch subs...
id assume they run at 200w would tht be close?
like.. if i got a 400w 2ch amp... should be a safe bet or would i be better off going for more power in the amp?
i know itd hards without specs... but yeah any advice would be much appreciated

I would say, Sell them, and buy some decent subs, or sub. Trust me.

Is the model number visible anywhere?
If so, google is your friend for the specs.

What did you pay for them? Pics?
The price difference between lets say your subs (which Im guessing wont be the best) compared to some "good" subs is not much at all.
I paid $130 per DVC JBL sub about 2 years ago now. A very good sub for the money.

yeah man. i know all that.
amped em up when i bought em and they sounded good for the music i put through them.
and i already bought em, so im gonna stick with em for a while.
im more interested in a decent amp. something i keep for when i eventually upgrade.

im in the same boat with ya mate i have 2 subs ( SB12XB clarion 12") in a twin box and are running off seperate amps witch i know i will hav to change to just 1 amp sooner or later,
i had a single sub first with 1 amp and it sounded great but i thort it could sound better so i bourght a second sub and another amp exatly the same as the one ( APX2120 200w clarion amp) and built a twin box myself and now it dosnt sound anywere near as good, some people hav said i need a pice of timber to seperate the 2 sub inside the box and other people think i should do that and put on 1 amp and use the other for my 6x9's ,
but i got no idea
i was thinking of getting a PIONEER GM-5300T 760W 2CH the specications are 125W RMSx2 @ 4 ohms - 190W RMSx2 @ 2 ohms - 380W RMSx1 @ 4 ohms
the amp that i hav the specification are:60W × 2 Into 4 Ohms, 20Hz-20kHz @ < 0.1%THD 90W × 2 Into 2 Ohms, 20Hz-20kHz @ < 0.1%THD
i got no idea about the ohms or how to get it from 4 to 2 but yeh any help would be apriciated aswell

do it once do it right, otherwise you will end up paying even more, ive learnt the hard way
on my 3rd car battery, 3rd sub, 2nd set of front speakers, 2nd sub amp, 2nd set of wireing, and may still have to replace stuff yet

How are you on a 3rd battery?
My battery has been running for over a year, not including however long it was in the car before I bought it....
Thats with a decently powerful sound system....just top the water up and she's fine....

Basically, when it comes to ohms, you have more options when you are running more than one sub, or a sub with dual voice coil (DVC).
The other thing that affects the ohm load on your amp, is how you wire the multiple subs, or multiple voice coils.
You two wiring options are either SERIES or PARALLEL. More info on the difference: http://www.bcae1.com/srsparll.htm
I'm assuming your subs are single 4 ohm voice coils. Running these in series doubles the ohm load presented to the amp. So this will show an 8 ohm load, which is not what you want.
Running these in parallel will present a 2 ohm load to the amp. As long as the amp can handle the 2 ohm load, then you will most likely get more power out of the amp. Just remember, however, that the total output power in parallel will be 'split' between the two subs.
So... Looking at that amp you're looking at getting, you only really have one option - running it in 2 channels at 4 ohm each channel - so you're only pushing 125w into each sub.
You cannot run the subs in parallel with this amp because it doesn't have a 2ohm rating in bridged mode (Running as a one channel Amp).
Hope all this makes sense - if you need clarification, just ask. :)

yeh they are single 4 ohm voice coil subs, thanx for ur help, but im still confused on what to do i got told today that if i hav 2 subs in one box and there running off seperate amps and 1 is set slightly different it will make em both sound like crap, what amp would u surgest to run these sub or what i should do ??

Yeah, if both subs are not in their own chamber and run off seperate amps/amp channels, you can risk it not sounding as good as it could, and also if one amp/amp channel craps out, you risk damaging the that sub, because the other sub will be applying pressure on it.
In a nut shell, multiple subs in a single chamber need to be perfectly balanced.
So either pull the box apart and put a partition in (not likely) or get yourself a 2 ohm stable monobloc amp or a bridgeable 2 channel amp that is 2ohm stable in bridged mode.

oh ok cheer for the help mate, i might put in a piece of mdf in between the subs to make 2 chambers, and eventually buy a better 2ch amp for both subs....any suggestions on a decent amp

Dont put a split between the two subs.
If you dont seal it properly, both subs will sound sensationally average. Its a pain in the ****, and for $100 you can buy a brand new twin sub box anyway.
Good amp? depends on budget and what you want and plan to run.

yeh i was think of buying a new sub box but they all pretty much look the same and look pretty shiite, my opinions anyway, well a good amp for anything up to about $450.....i didnt wanna fork out the cash for a new box since the box i built took me a while to make and yeh i dont wanna see my efforts go down the drain. Wot stuff should i use to seal the box??

Good amp for $450......hrm.......
Jaycar response......1ohm stable. That outta do.

Seal it with silicone from the inside......
If there are any gaps that are visable from the outside, use a 50/50 mix of silicone and MDF glue. Seals really well, somewhat flexible once it sets, and next to impossible to pry MDF apart once this mixture sets.....love the stuff.

Def good amp - im running a jaycar monobloc powering 2x subs too. All the power you need. Especially if you get two 4ohm DVC subs - you'll be able to present a 1 ohm load to the amp, and get the full 1000wrms cranking! lol

yeh that is a good amp but i wasnt after somthing with as much bang, i was think maybe a 600w-700w 2ch amp would do the trick
2Ch amp?
Bah...
Subs are meant to be powered by monoblocks.......
The problem is if you buy a 2ch now that will only just power the subs, you will be buying another amp when you upgrade......
Then something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-Soundstream-TRX2-820-2-Ch-Tarantula-Amp-08-09-Model_W0QQitemZ190273396774QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_C ar_Parts_Accessories?hash=item190273396774&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
Nice amps....currently have the TRX2.640 powering my fronts....... 320wrms @ 2ohm load should do it LOL

im pretty sure i need a 2ch amp cos the way there set up ive got each sub on a seperate input on the box, sooo that being the case im pretty sure i need a 2ch amp , i would go somthing exspensive like that but im only on aprentice wages , my mate has a PIONEER GM-5300t running his 2 clarion subs, there the same subs as mine and there in a store bourght box anbd it sounds good, any thorts??

yeah man i get that.. i know where oyu're coming from, thing is.. im an apprentice.. earn bugger all, but as common sense will tell you, each year = better $$$.
at the moment... pay = poo. so cant afford to do it all properly, but the way i look at it, cheaper subs are better than none, and this way ill have more bottom end. i dont listen to the kinda music most of you probably do.. i dont need every doof doof or tal (im not putting down that music, just saying i dont need that kinda quality)
but yeah man, i do appreciate your advice.
i bought a cadence ampo last night form jb for $260.
4ch 800w peak
gonna run it as a 2ch mono, and it should pump 200 rms into each sub.
thats plenty for my liking, as i dont intend to have the subs dominate the mix.
and if worse comes to worst, i only parted with $185 for the subs, so im not losing too much moulah if they blow.
eventually i will go for a fully decked out custom install, but for now, just wanted something to do the job with the music i listen to.
thanks everyone for advice and input etc.
appreciate it.
cheers

for the clarion sb12xb subs i wouldnt crank too much power into them...they are only an entry level sub
have seen plenty of these fried by customers who put the bass up a bit much on the deck even when only running off 400wrms
if you wanted to stick with the same brand i would recomend using your 2 apx2120's for your front and rear speakers (if they dont already have amps) and buying a apx1300 (or the new apx1301 at $299 rrp with 420wrms)

Yes but most of them will be sending the woofer a square sine to be fully sick for their mates and wonder why the coil melts.... idiots. Even entry level subs should handle a clean 300-400WRMS no worries.
