Hi all, K-Mart has on special, the 5-Litre pack of Castrol EDGE motor oil. It's a 25-50 weightage oil, and it's packaged in the gold plastic container.

Has anyone used it and/or is it any good? Usual price is $50, now down to $28. K-Mart Sunnybank if anyone wants it! Basically it says it's for pushrod or roller-rocker engines. Seems to be more of a hot-rod or modded big-V8 type of oil, from the description, but don't the TS V6 Magnas have roller rockers? I distinctly remember reading this in the brochure. Do correct me if this is not the case though.

Is 25-50 too thick an oil? (TS V6, original engine, 220,000km......running well, been taken care of but certainly not "new" anymore)

25w-50 would be pretty close to the money for a 2nd Gen.

Its supposed to be a decent range of oil from a decent brand - give it a shot.

G'day,
This is where Castrol is catching people out, "Castrol Edge" is "Premium" range of oils, the 0w-40 is around $70-80 for 5 litres for your evo's and other high revving engines (they all are 5 litres BTW) 5w-30 is around $40-50 (this is the one for 3rd gens) start the flames but it was the factory grade fill and not being a chemical engineer I'm only stating fact. Castrol is very clever in marketing price, position, product, promotion. Price sounds good, position "premium" sound good, Product (open to all to debate) promotion (at the moment) good. The 25W-50 is for older engines like push rod V8's and V6's (read older falcodores) but for a V6 2nd Gen I would personally go for a 10W - 15W-40 to 50. You will need the "thinner" oil to help the upper engine when cold and the thicker part being a "older worn in engine" (not worn out just worn in). If I was you I would go a 10W-40 or over summer a 15w-40 to 50 grade of oil. (Personal opinion only). Please let us all know what you go for?

I went with the Castrol EDGE 25/50 oil and had the 220,000km service done on 23rd Dec.

Everything's good, but the car seems to be louder and does not seem to rev as smoothly as I recall (after fresh oil was put in during previous servicing).

I honestly do not think it is a mental perception on my part......I have given it much thought before posting it up here.

Could the 25/50 oil weight be too heavy? (TS V6) Therefore am I doing any harm by leaving it in there, ie. should I replace the oil with something else before 10,000km, or just live this oil out for another 10k

Thanks
Justin

I've always used Castrol Magnatec 10w-40, runs very well.

I run the Edge sport 0 40 in the XR8 and it copes with the abuse of track days. The last one was in Nov on a 38deg day with no ill affects I always have pressure after a few hard laps unlike a few major known synthetic brand oils that are more expensive than the Edge and I swear by Castrol oil
I am just using the GTX3 15 40 in the magna and it is fine

Oils ain't oils. Wasn't that a Castrol TV ad....?
What means: "such and such oil runs ok"? ANY oil in the donk will still make it turn and function, even olive oil. Doesn't mean tho that it's good for the donk. One can only see the results after bathful of km (200-300G) - really.
I'm against mineral oils, especially these which leave residues and "protect" the engine. Use only synthetic oils, start with 10-40'ish and see how it stays in.
Mine loses no oil during 5G distance, and has 215 G in clock. Change oil + filter frequently, max 6 months intervals, if you love your engine. Sooner if plenty of km driven.

Modern oils and metal technology are both so good now that I think that any mid range oil and regular oil changes will make the engine outlast the rest of the car. I'm old enough to remember 5,000 Km /3 month oil changes being recommended by car manufacturers, and the engine still wearing out pistons and bores as well as crank bearings in 160,000 Km or less! I changed to Mobil 1 with annual oil changes about 10 years ago, which was rather expensive! It does a great job - my son drove 15 Km with no water (welsh plug popped out due to crack developing in the block) and the head was destroyed but the pistons and bored were fine - this was a freshly reconditioned motor too, with tight clearances. Do I need that level of protection? NO! I now use castrol gtx 2 or 3 with 5,000 Km oil changes and new filter every second change. I figure that when the valve stem seals give up in my V6 at 300,000 Km it will be time for a teardown and inspection. A quick bore hone, new rings, head work, big end and main bearings and she will be good again.
In summary:
All modern oils are good - pick the right viscosity range for your engine - but they won't stop seals from wearing out/hardening.
Regular oil changes are important. Personal choice, 5,000 Km for me.
