View Full Version : Auto Trans (TJ) learning?

I see the transmission is 'learning' and having a look around the net it appears if you disconnect the battery it must re-learn.

I believe it leanrs when to change up, change down etc based on your driving style, what I am wondering is, how long does it remember for and if you change your driving style (or someone else drives) how does it 'know'?

Anyone know more details?

When you disconnect the battery and then reconnect, the ecu will re learn how to idel, etc.. and the auto will learn how to shift off your driving style. As your driving style changes so does the ecu and it will change to the driving style you choose. And it remembers it until you disconnect the battery again and i read somewhere it take around 40 keystarts to relearn as well. :D . I hope that helped, someone else might be able to explain it a bit more.

The fuzzy logic transmissions learn through a variety of sensors and have 'elastic' shift patterns. The way I would discribe it is an adjustable, automatic version of a power economy switch.

The transmission detects the way you are driving and the cars position (incline/decline etc) and adjusts a shift map to suit. If you are agressive, the changes will be sharper, the engine will rev higher.

With Mitsu transmissions, you can tell the feature is functioning if all of a sudden after a thrash, you drive sedately. the 'box will have a delay in learning and will continue the rough, high rev shifts for a bit.

The auto will take very small amounts to learn the new driving style. Battery disconnection means that the computers have to check and re-learn all the systems connected. Idle speed, smoothness of changing from R to N to D and then a basic map of gear changing. Somewhere on this forum, there is the Mitsubishi service bulliten for this proceedure.

most auto's will hold that long before changing when you have your foot to the floor

im sure it doesn't hold it that long if you're accelerating sensibly

Sensible accelleration is a 4900 shift point. but I never accelerate sensibly

lol my gear box is strange it like's to change at about 2000 and you'll be in 4th doing 40....go figure.

What it does if i stomp it though is hold till about 5900 and then change, but if i wanna drive it hard i use tiptronic mode anyway and hold it to redline :D

My TJ series 2, trans seems to hang onto 1 st gear about 2700rpm before up changing even when driving like a granny
Tried disconnecting battery to reset the trans, makes stuff all difference.
