I've just done a 100k service and it cost me $850 at an independent mechanic. Wondering if it is a fair price for it?

Service included:
Rear & Front spark plugs x 6
Oil plug seal x 6
R/cover gasket x 2
Fuel filter
Air filter
Fuel injector clean x 6
R & R r/cover gasket's throttle body clean
Oil replacement & oil filter
Coolant replacement
Sticking the rear windscreen brake light back up the ceiling
Transmission oil replacement

Actually, whilst I wouldn't be happy at paying that myself, I don't think it's over the top.

To replace both rocker cover gaskets, 6 leads plus seals will cost around $600 at most Mitsu service depts. Throw in a transmission service is another $200 at least. Plus a service is another $200, then the injector cleaning, which I have no idea how much it costs, & you're way over the $850 that the OP paid.

EDIT: To the OP: Why wasn't the timing belt done, though?

Timing belt gets done at 90k kms not 100k.

Timing belt gets done at 90k kms not 100k.

Only if done by a Mitsu dealership. If you look in the service book it states to do it at 100,000kms. The only reason Mitsu do it at 90,000kms & the platinum spark plugs at 105,000kms is because most people cbf/ don't bother bringing their car in at 100,000kms.

i got pretty much the same service a few weeks back, except i didnt get rocket cover gaskets, fuel filter and the ceiling brake light. and it cost me $600 so its on par i suppose.

$850 too much, what do you guys want for a person who spends thousands setting up a workshop!! you dont care about buying a pair of jeans for $160 bucks that cost myer 20 but you cry when you have to spend a grand on a car that keeps you safe and gets you where you want to go:nuts:

2 rocker cover gasket sets with seals $94 bucks
Injectors cleaned $35 x 6 = $210
Plugs, assume all Platinum, $120
Then you have trans fluid, oil, coolant, filters etc -- does not leave much left for labour does it.

Yes the dealerships do the belt at 90k but the most just do it at 100 as is a nice round figure and easy to remember.

As for what you paid, I do not think that it was extreme, was about on the money for what you got, I have seen many charged a lot more for a lot less

Really? Sounds reasonable to me. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd imagine you're looking at 4 hours labour at least, possibly more. (If I was doing it you'd be looking at 4 days and 6 slabs and I couldn't guarantee it would run afterward, but I'm assuming the average mechanic is quicker and wayyy more knowledgeable) You're getting a throttle body clean, all new spark plugs, new filters and oils, little annoying bits and pieces fixed, so to me a weekend (which this sort of thing would take the average owner/mechanic) is worth more than $850 and if I can drop it off on my way to work, pick it up after work and never have to know what sort of effort went into it, then thats $850 well spent as far as I'm concerned. I guess the value is subjective and some people would have enjoyed spending their weekend doing this. Each to their own, but for mine it's an OK deal!!

Because they consume time, and goods.
What a stupid comment to make, go buy your extractors then, I'm sure it'll sound great when your timing belt snaps, your engine seizes and your cooling system gets blocked.
have fun with that.

mechanics are one of the lowest charging trades around to be honest, most independents seem to charge around $60 an hour... any other trade would slug you with $100 minimum, with some charging up to $200 for basic work. Dont like the price, learn how to do stuff yourself and get off your butt on a weekend :)

Unfortunately cars cost money....they depreciate , they need up keep and they need repairs.

When you own a car you need to factor in all this......I budget $1200 a year for servicing and repairs.
That's oil changes every 5000 new filter at 10000 ...servicing by handbook. That works out to be around $450 the rest goes on the wear and tear....changing exhausts ...whatever comes up.

Some years I go under budget ...some years over. But I avoid major damage like head gaskets by doing the regular maintenance.

i didnt get my timing belt done at 95k because i needed new brakes so my 105000k service turned into a nice xmas bonanza at $1100 with new transmission oil plugs fuel filter thru mitsu dealer

Hope you have had it done now

And you are 100% with the cost of an oil filter why would you not change the filter.

The general reason most change oil at 5k is because it is the thing to do, most do not know why though.

Oil builds up cantaminents including h2so4 or sulphuric acid. The sulphur in the fuel burns, when combustions occurs there is also water vapour, this combines and some ends up in your oil This is the reason I change every 5k or 6 months. Cars doing short trips will have this issue a lot more as the engine will not warm up totally.

You change the oil, a lot of the rubbish and some old oil is in your filter, might just as well leave it to 10k given that most modern day oils are good for a lot longer than that

I would say that's a reasonable price. You got a fair bit of work done.

Mine just cost me 3 k in repairs :( but i paid it and didn't complain as i knew it needed doing. A number of seals/gaskets that were leaking oil, new alternator, new drivers side power window assembly, timing belt tensioner, timing belt, various pulleys/belts, power steering fluid, coolant and thats about all I can remember right now...

My timing belt was changed at 83k due to its age so it wasn't included.

How does head gaskets get damage?

Got a good friend who is a mechanic and he is fine doing my next tune and service for parts only and a nice coffee and cake next time he is over.

Oh head gaskets can be many things, mostly just wear and tear.

My mechanic also told me my engine mount needs to be replace at next service. What causes the engine mount to be damaged?

$850 sounds reasonable, definitely not ripped off as many people are saying.

You could get it cheaper if you knew someone or something like that.

I'm looking at spending closer to $1600+ for the 100k service on my car........ but that's irrelevant to the topic :doubt:
but I wouldnt complain if i was in your shoes!
well, i probably would.. who wants to pay anything for anything!

my 100k was 900 bucks, but that was for new platinum plugs, leads, timing belt, oil filter etc.

850 isnt too bad when you consider all the stuff you got done. worst case scenario you're like 100-150 bucks out i'd say

It sucks spending money on cars but what do you do....its got to be done.
That price seems fair to me, if the quality of the work is good don't complain.
