Hi I'm looking at getting an Alpine Type R sub in the premade Alpine box, just wondering if anyone knows how well this box actually suits the sub? I.e will I be gettting the best sound out of this box or would I be better off making up a custom box according to all the specifications, vas, qms, etc. for this sub?

that box should be perfect for that sub
it'll be fine for general listening and maybe for sound comps

It's the genuine Alpine USA box for a Type R 12" they wouldnt make it if it didnt suit.

I have this sub/box and sounds great, well it IS made for the sub. :)
I'm hoping to make my own box soon though because alpine obviously didn't build it to suit a magnas boot, so it doesn't fit too well, taking up more boot space than needed.

You tend to find Alpine like to describe very cubic boxes for the ideal enclosure but if you use one of the speakerbox programs that calculates what is ideal etc you usually find the manufacturer has different ideas.

Also, just because Alpine "made" this box for the sub DOES NOT mean it's the best enclosure, otherwise they'd be using it in their demo car and you'll find Alpine demo cars always have molded fiber-glass enclosures.

I personally wouldnt buy a pre-fab box.

Then again, I'de shoot myself if I did after spending $300 on software to design it for me, and $400 on tools to build boxes lol

For your entry level stereo, pre-fab boxes work well.

Anything more, and you need to look at custom made.

Sounds like the pre fab box should be good enough for my needs, just wanted to check what the general concensus was on their quality as I know that some manufacturers make pre fab boxes that do very little to get the best sound out of a sub as they are trying to compromise on size, when in reality if they had increased the internal volume of the box the sub would sound a lot better.

You'd be an extreme dumbass to enter your car with a pre-fab box in a car show, that's just poor form.

Mate with the wheel well in magnas, do you happen to know the litreage of cubic feet, looking at using this for my install.

Cubic capacity of the wheel well?

I'de say without the wheel, maybe around 2 cubic foot, or 56lt. Thats just a rough stab in the dark.

I know with a fair bit of work, and around $400 worth of materials, you can actually build an enclosure into the wheel well and keep the tyre there. Seen it in streetmachine magazine. Perfect stealth install. I havnt worked with fibreglass though...about to start for a mates install - but it is do-able, wheel is still accessible quite easily too.

For the OP, i have the exact same setup, 138.0db Very lightly tuned out of this box, with a MRD 605 running it, Its better then anything else pre fab off the shelf for that sub.

Hope you're not planning to put a Type R into the wheel well, you seen how big the magnet is on those things? I'm doing a boot install with a 12" Type R at the moment, big mother ****er.

JESUS what are you building your boxes out of, carbon fiber? $110 would get you enough material to do the wheel well, and have leftover for the entire rest of the boot install :S

its funny but i have actually seen it a few times...
funniest was a tx3 hatch with a jbl amp pioneer 12" in prefab box and 6x9 cut into the rear shelf...then stock wheels and stock engine

Its not just the wheel well.

Wheel well is fibreglass, then you have the false floor, hinges, locks, wiring, carpet.....

This isnt just the wheel well - its a whole floor install, makes the sub hidden inside the wheel well, and you can still put things on top.

Hence the reason why I want the wheel well, even though I own two cars and use mine mainly on weekends, I also have 2 kids, a 5yr old and 10mth old so need the boot space, and i like the stealth look.
