Does anyone know if you can fit gas struts to the boot lid to gain more boot space?

The boot will still be the same size....how will you gain "more" boot space?
Just curious....

Maybe he wants to add struts and remove the hinges?

Yes you can.

Need to be handy with a welder/mechanics.

Depending on what you want to remove to gain more space (the bars that run across between the two hinges, or everything), will depend on how hard this will be.

From memory, BA falcons use a gas strut system, might want to hunt around some wrecker's for their set up.

Factor in painting of the struts, some time welding, and you could have this knocked over in a day.

Cost? Not sure.....depends on how much you do yourself, and how much wreckers feel like charging you for the parts.

I'm thinking OP may be trying to eliminate the torsion springs under parcel tray (several folks have mentioned their ire at the bars restricting mega-magnet speakers, etc.)??
EDIT: ERS beat me, and with better ideas/info to boot!!

Correct remove the hinges, so when the boot is jamed packed I don't have to work about lining the stuff in the boot so I can close it.

I'll have a nosy at the falcon and see what I can mock up.

Has anyone actually done it?

Not AFAIK.
I'd be very keen to do it, but with the welding involved I can see it getting expensive.
I Like the idea though, i was just planning on putting gas struts.

I'll give it a crack over the break.

I think the commodores are the same.

VY commodores I think have a similar set up as the falcon.

Have a look at a complete set up, it would be rather worth while if you do a lot of travelling with a boot full.

When the hinges close on a 3rd gen boot anything under them will not fit, so you effectively loose about 3.5" (Maybe 4") height of the boot where the hinges are, by putting in gas struts you will be able to place items under this place with no trouble, it will also give a little more height under the parcel shelf after removing the springs.

Won't work, already looked into it.
There is no space in the gap between the boot seal rubber and boot edge in a 3rd gen to fit the hinge and gas strut like there is in a 380.
