Hey dudes, just thought i'd get some advice before doing anything.
For some time now i've been wishing to replace my rear muffler with the bolt on lukey, but recently i've been thinking should i save money and just cut the muffler off and weld a straight pipe and put a tip on that.
And if i don't like it i'll fork out the money for the lukey.
What's everyone's thoughts on this?

My good friend has done this on his Citroen turbo and it sounds nuts.

What would you describe it as?
Like low rumble on idle?

And how's it sound when you give it some throttle?

Ive driven around before with no rear muffler (had to get a new gasket when i put the new rear box on) sounds like a bogandore to be honest, really loud and droney, and 100% cop bait.

Edit: Add raspy to that as well, sounds very crap.

Ah **** that.
I've heard supercheap sell the lukey AL4-5597 for around the $200 mark, might be worth it.
Easy to install myself?

Yep easy 15-20min DIY job, just make sure to order a rear flange gasket (3 bucks) and grab a pack of bolts from the champion stand that are close to the factory size ones, (cant remember the exact size off the top of my head)

Thanks heaps man, where would i find the size of the bolts?
Can't i use the ones that are already on the car?

Cant use the ones on the car as the nuts are welded onto the flange of the original exhaust, they are a resonable size bolt, probably 1/2 or something close to that

Mytsgt95s has this same setup on his 380... in fact he has a twin exhaust system, both sides with no muffler.
http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showpost.php?p=965348&postcount=94
To the best of my knowledge this set-up is illegal, but he said that as long as the muffler-less exhaust complies with RTA noise levels, its okay. Personally I wouldn't do it, but his does sound very nice.

Yeah i'm aware that it's illegal and all.
That does sound nice, but raspy, and probs wouldn't sound the same on a 3rd gen.

For my 2 cents worth, go with the Lukey muffler. I had one on my TF, backed with Pacemaker headers. Was loud (bit droney) and had a great rumble. Have a look and listen...

i had a 3.5inch turbo back no muff,cat,resi on my Sr20.

had it for years and not once did i got flack from the police. I didnt drive like a hoon, i didnt hang out at hoon haunts, and wasnt a twat driver. I figure that had the most to do with me having no trouble. My exhaust was freaking loud and i loved it, and it never had to grow on me. If my Verada didnt have a child to transport id have 3" straight pipe on in now.

That 380 sounds nice, would love to hear is in real life, maybe a couple thousand off redline.

Went in to Supercheap today and they don't can't get lukey mufflers in anymore, only some dodgy brand called caliber.
So went to Autobarn and they can give it to me for $264, but no orders can go through until after jan 5th.
Also the picture in the lukey catalogue was wrong, it had like a few feet of piping then the muffler then ANOTHER few feet of piping. So i had to double check the model number that i had left at home to be certain.

Might go order it in early jan.

They are idiots then, go back in talk to the manager, if they are still too stupid, get them to ring the tradeline, get them to punch in the number AL4-5597 and it will come up on icat it should be 205 + freight. Oh yeah will come under the supplier Tenneco.

Let me know if you still have trouble with them, i still have quite a few friends in high places there and can swing a favour.

Cheers man, i won't have the chance to go back in until the new year as the nearest Autobarn is 50 odd k's away.
Maybe that 264 included the freight.
Will let you know what happens than man, i've strayed away from the dodgy straight pipe way, doing it properly the first time.

Magna00, thanks again for your advice and willingness to help.

Turn your sound up, I took the video on a W910i and it didn't really do it justice but you get the idea.

But then so are a lot of the mods we do to our cars ay?

I just hope the EPA pings anyone for stupid mods like this, and people wonder why modded cars are targeted, its attitudes like this.

Wasn't just talking about the no muffler law mate.
Lot's of people on AMC have rims too big, incorrect tyre load ratings, tint too dark, pods etc.

I know this mod is illegal hence why i've said i'm ordering the lukey.

Cops arent EPA

FYI the fine for removing any pollution emission systems on a road registered car is $15,000

i had a straight pipe without muffler running ralliart extractors and because mine is manual i dont get the drone. it sounds more like an R1 motorbike

sounded tuff and didnt get annoying..in an auto it probably would tho

Ordered the lukey muffler the other day, $240 inc the gasket. Should be in mid-week.
Also booked in for some tint for next monday :)

Thanks for all of your opinions.

Guilty.

- Rims are 18s (Legal is only 17s for execs based on the NSW 2" law)
- Tint is 5%

How much do you expect for fitting? I want twin exhausts on the next car :)

I'll be fitting this myself man, sounds like a pretty straight forward job.

what percentage tint?

J-Flo

20%
Sort of contradicted myself by not abiding by the law.
But having dark tint isn't as bad as removing a pollution emission system.

It's much worse, one car putting out more CO2 isn't going to hurt, but one car smashing into 5 others will do a lot more damage. It would cause more pollution as well.

It's not like having slightly darker than legal tint will automatically make you smash into 5 cars.
Also i've heard a lot of import cars coming in already have illegal tint from FACTORY.

Dark tint is fine dunno why everyone has to have a cry about dark tint.
If you think your gonna have an accident because of your tint, you know what, I'd probably watch the road instead of looking at the tint.

Just picked up the lukey muffler.
They realised they had overcharged me so it was only $202.99
Cheap as chups.

But forgot to get the bolts, can i just take the gasket into a hardware store and get 3 nuts and bolts that fit?

J-Flo
08-01-2009, 04:58 PM
The lukey is now installed, still need to buy a tip, although the standard tip looks a bit mean.
The most time consuming part was getting the old one off, the bolts were rusted on, nothing a bit of inox couldn't fix :)
As i was jacking up my car the jack collapsed and my car fell, luckily not damaging the car, or me!
So i used the jack out of dads falcon.

Pics and maybe a vid will be up tonight.

Slightly off the topic re legality of mods to cars.
Rego check has no bearing re such things, most rego inspectors have no idea abut such stuff and might even give one incorrect info.
Not all cops know the details of mods in general, they are trained to read radar screens.
But - when it comes to EPA or RTA or Ins Comps, then it's different.
Your responsibility, not anyone else’s - is to keep your vehicle Roadworthy as stipulated by laws. Failure to do so can lead to various prosecutions and voiding insurance claims etc etc. Not to mention bad image to ppl modding their cars. Let's keep the bad image out of Magnas. And leave it for other brands and ppl buying those other brands. Howzat?
Check various Sticky posts here to see regulations re basic mods as per State.
Or simply contact your Road Authorities, preferrably via writing (e-mails suffice).
End of preaching

As long as ins comp acknowledges and accepts it - go for it! Haven't done so my self, no need - all mods within RTA specs so far.
Bit late response - I've been sleeping.... :)

I've encountered a problem..

Bought a tip yesterday and got home to only realize that the rear bracket is 150mm from the end of the standard pipe, and the pipe doesn't straighten right out till about 135mm from the end.
And my tip (twins) was 200mm long. i'd like twins but none of them i look at are short enough.
Any suggestions?
