Gday guys, received a pioneer headunit for Christmas, and i've been given all the cables i need to install it myself.

My question is; is it worth me installing it myself or am i going to get into to big a mess attempting?

or

should i just take it to autobarn and get installed for me?

I really want to install it myself, but dont want to find myself in a mess and screw it up.

P.S is there any "how-to's" on installing one? Merry Christmas all too. Cheers. JM

If you haven't already get yourself a set of AERPRO wiring harness adapters. That'll save you from having to do too much cutting and soldering. From memory you need to make a better earth, but thats not hard.

http://www.aerpro.com.au/vrg.php

Enter your vehicle details into that. It'll give you the adapters you need. Autobarn have them - should cost around $30 but if you get in today you might get a discount on them.

As for pulling apart the dash there is an FAQ on here.

Do it yourself man, learn as you go, get some knowledge.
Don't take it to autobarn.

Bain's console removal guide (http://members.optusnet.com.au/miltonf/car/mitsu/console/stereoremoval.htm) will help you, then it's just out with the old and in with the new.

Yer i was looking at that before, do i need to take the parts off under the steering wheel or just the centre console?

Well I don't.

The only reason you need to remove the drivers side footwell trim is to disconnect the cable that allows for the hot\cold air ventilation through the top centre vents.

Personally I just pop the top vents out and disconnect it from there making sure not to drop that cable down. Its connected on the RHS of the vents where the dial for the adjustment is.

IMO its much easier.

Thats it mate.

As for tools you'll need, phillips head screwdriver, soldering iron, solder and maybe some sandpaper to sand back a painted metal part to make an earth.

Installing a HU is really easy.
-Pull out the old HU
-Cut the existing wires
-Stick in the new HU
-Reconnect the wires using solder and a soldering iron (make sure you know which wires are which)
-Stick some shrink wrap over the solders
-Push HU back securely into panel.
DONE!

Taking it to a shop will just you money and is not worth it.

If you can get the Aerpro plug just for the late model magna, they have which wire is which printed on the wire, dont worry about the Aerpro pioneer plug, just use the ridgy didge pioneer plug. Solder all the matching wires together, insulate, then just plug it all in.

If you ever upgrade, you can snip it all at the solder and do the same thing again.....

I swear with the Pioneer instructions, and the writing on the wires, its a walk in the park.

4 x pairs speaker.
1 x constant power
1 x earth
1 x power
and the little blue one left over to switch amps on and off.

Just dont forget the aerial.

It should be said, using the above method, no cutting, soldering or modification to to your cars original harness is necessary. ( unless you have an Electric Aerial.

The Aerpro wiring harnesses will come with an earth wire already attached to the harness. All you gotta do is attach the other end of the earth wire to an unpainted metal surface.

When i installed a Kenwood HU in my Verada i used the Aerpro wiring harnesses. I attached the earth wire to one of the screws that hold down the metal stereo cage. Here is a pic (refer to blue arrow):

The whole install was plug and play. No cutting or soldering required. Easy as piss.

Yep, with the harness it's too easy to do yourself to pay someone else.

Nice, Yeah, getting the 2 harness adaptors is a solderless solution.
I have a soldering iron and saved the dough as It would leave me with the original pioneer plug left over

cheers for the repleys guys.

had a crack at it yesterday; stripped out all the centre console, got the original headunit out, but couldnt get it out of the 2 brackets that hold it to the console bit, the 2 screws on each side where in super tight, got one of them out, but mangled the other 3  so pretty well there not going anywhere. so gave up after that. so plugged everything back in, but must of missed a plug in the back on the old unit and now my radio doesnt work lol so unless i can be bothered un-doing the whole thing im stuck without music until the 6th on january.

Unless anyone wants to give a more in-depth step by step?

OR

Knows how i can get those screws on the side of the arms/brackets of the h/u

Dude... i think you've made a mess... LoL
It shouldn't be that hard, the only thing that should throw you off is matching up the wiring, which shouldn't be a problem cos you have the harness...
I changed mine over a couple days ago, and did it all by myself, and I'm a girl!!! LoL
Maybe I should come help you LoL If you dont live too far away that is.

You can drill them out if you want. But its probably easier to grab the edges of the screw with some bull nose pliers and twist.

Don't worry, the same thing happened to me on my install. The factory Mitsubishi ones are a bitch to get out.

Is it necessary to make another earth, does the factory HU earth through the chassis rather than out through a cable or something?

Mr_Roberto

its better to make your own earth
factory grounds arent always that good

Hey Man,

If you need a hand, send me a PM - I've installed many-a-headunit in my days and would be glad to help out.
