pioneer, Rockford Fosgate, Clarion, JL Audio, Cadence, INfinity

the list is huge. its all really personal preference. goto sumwhere like JB hi-fi, test out some headunits see which ones you like. test some speakers, find the ones with the best sound for you

I'm in the same situation as u. Got $2000 and want to upgrade. I'm planning on getting an Alpine CDA-9807 headunit, Alpine SPS-170A 6.5" for the front, then Pioneer 305CDOUBLE subs, along with an amp. Should be roughly around $2000 installed if i can get a few things second-hand or off ebay. Alpine headunits are great and very reliable. The speakers are mainly for quality and not so much bass. And the Pioneer subs are definitely loud enough! 400wrms, 800w max each!! So for me it's alpine and pioneer all the way!! + some sort of amp...

nothing beats kicker solobaric (square) subs. Just one is more than enough. I run alpine and focal gear in my car. Have to say im happy. Once i got the $ i wanna upgrade to the newest gear.

i wouldn't say no rear speakers at all, you're rear passengers will HATE you. a guy at tonkins said a great idea is to make a MDF baffle, that bolts over the 6x9 holes, with a 5" mounted in them, and a port hole into the boot, that way u get a nice rear fill and a port into the boot 4 the subs!

each brand specialize in different areas. So dont try and go out and buy one brand for whole system.

For HU id recomend Alpine. Eclipse are nice but just too damm expensive.

Speakers have a variety including Hertz, Orion, some of the Clarion, JL Audio, Cadence, INfinity, blaupunkt, alpine and pioneer stuff are also ok but some of their speakers arnt too good. focal or Boston are best but again in my opinion are too expensive.

The kicker solobaric's are definately good another good sub brand is also rockford fostgate and the Alpine type-R subs arnt too bad.

I heard that JBL have really good subs, but very expensive. Anyone used MTX subs? Ive heard some and they also go quite good.

My preference:

Head unit:

---Eclipse: Look great. Nice stats. Overpriced a bit, not many features.
---Alpine: Look great. Huge amount of features, great reputation. Reliable.
---Pioneer/JVC (if on a budget): MP3. Look good. Equalizer. Good Price.

Speakers:

---JL Audio: Sound absoloutely amazing. Even their entry range stuff is awesome for the price (which is rare for JL Audio). Their 6x9's rock.
---Cadence: Loud brand. High power output.
---Eclipse: Awesome sounding speakers. Rate their 6.5" 2-ways to kill pioneer splits anyday. Heard them against each other and eclipse killed it.

Amps:

---JL Audio: Great quailty. Expensive. Don't OVER RATE products.
---Cadence: Huge range, good price.
---Fusion (if on a budget): Large range, good price.

Subwoofers:

---JL Audio: Again, quality is all but second to none. Fantastic sounding stuff. But not as loud as other brands for your $.
---Kicker: Solobaric 15". Loud loud loud. Shook the boot seals off of a mates car. (PM if interested in buying).
---Cadence: Large power output. Huge range. I use 2x12" Wild beasts and they are very loud.
---Fusion (if on a budget): Great bang for buck. Loud.

Just going on personal experience here. Can't comment on focal etc as i've never heard them in a car.
Best of luck ;)

Cheers,
Cam.

P.S Try to buy all of your stuff from one shop, you should be able to bargain the price down a fair bit. Shop around. Buy the speakers and gear that YOU like the most, that YOU think sound best for your budget.

Here is my recommendations for both the budget specified and a recommended system if you can raise the budget a little:

System Cost: $2000
Source Unit(s): Alpine CDM-7874EB / Pioneer DEH-P5650MP / Clarion DXZ746MP
Front Speaker(s): Boston FS-60 / Diamond M361 / Hertz HSK 165 / Focal 165A / Rainbow SLX 230.03 / Morel Pulse / Phoenix Gold TX6.5
Sub(s): JL Audio 12W0-4 / Image Dynamics ID12V.3 / Diamond M312 / Hertx HX 300 / Boston GS1204 / Phoenix Gold R12D
Amplifier(s): Audison SRx3 / Phoenix Gold R8.0:4 / Zapco i450
Cable: Stinger / Phoenix Gold / Audison

Or if you can raise the budget:
Source Unit(s): Alpine CDA-7878R / Pioneer DEH-P6550MP / Clarion DXZ846MP
Front Speaker(s): Kicker RS6 / Boston RC620 / Diamond M661 / Focal Polyglass 165V2 / Hertz HSK 1600 / Rainbow CS 265 P3 / Morel Dotech Mk II
Sub(s): JL Audio 12W3 / Image Dynamics IDQ12D4.V2 / Diamond M312 / Focal 33A / Hertx HX380 / Phoenix Gold TX12D
Amplifier(s): 2 x ARC Audio 2100XXK / Audison LRx2.250 & Audison LRx1.400 / Zapco 350 & Zapco 500M / Boston GT20 & Boston GT22 / Tru-Tech T-4.65 & Tru-Tech T-2.100 / Phoenix Gold R4.0:2 & Phoenix Gold R5.0:1
Cable: Stinger / Phoenix Gold / Audison

Now that can be narrowed down depending on what you listen too and what your music tastes are. ;)
