1. Do timing belts have to be changed every 90K or 100K?
2. How do I inspect the timing belt? Do I just take off the plastic cover?
3. Average cost for a second gen?
4. You get the water pump done at the same time yes? Anything else?
Info:
Car is coming up to 290K, due to my calculations of changing the belt every 90K it would seem that I am about 20K overdue. However, I think when I bought the car Slyts said something about the belt being done at 220ish K, but I am not sure and I have had timing chain problems on my old 1st gen and I don't want to go back there.
I'm scared, my wallet is trying to hide deeper in my pockets already!

they recommend 100,000 however they need to be replaced as they wear. This could be earlier but generally its longer.
If the water pump is that old, you might as well get it changed for the price its worth the security.
there is an expection cover on the rear bank. 2x10mm bolts.
Generally you are looking for wearing through the smooth edge of the belt, and also a rounding off of the teeth and cracking/peeling anywhere.
im sure my brother had a timing belt changed and it was 492$ not including water pump, but also including cam seals im sure.

Lynel covered the rest, But i would do the water pump at the same time. or else you save $70 first up, then have to blow $300 later when the water pump gives away.

Not on the same wavelength there for the avatar comment:P
But I would ring up mechanics, and see what they charge, best way to gauge what its going to cost.

i wondered how long before those pix with really odd looking faces (worse then in the vid) would pop up.
best bet would be to ring around first.

Now for the facts,
1. Belts every 100,000
2. You can not inspect a timng belt for wear aside from there being obvious damage from something cutting it. The Teeth are rounded new so no good there, unless you have exray vision you can not see the kevlar that holds it all together so useless there. (the cover is an inspection cover btw not an exception cover and is held on by 1 x 6mm bolt with a 10mm head)
3. Average cost, the kit will generally cost you around $165 including the tensioner and all seals, labour will really depend on who does it. Someone familiar with the car will generally do it in 2 - 2.5 hours, first timer but experienced machanic perhaps 3.5 hours max
4. You only do the water pump if it is dry, noisy, leaking. This can generally be inspected when the belt is off but 99% of the time given the mileage of the engine it would have been done last belt change so may be ok this time around.. Extras may include drive belts, rocker cover gaskets if needed with bollt seals. Unless you are going all out you do not need to do anything else.
Hope this assists
