View Full Version : Spot the Difference
I was wondering if someone would be able to explain the visual difference between the 6G72 motor and the 6G74 motor...... to be they almost look identical.... Can someone please explain ?

I don't know - but I just hope that everyone reads the visual - key word there - and doesn't tell you one is a 3.0L the other is a 3.5L.
The stamp that says either 6g72 or 6g74 :)

in the 3rd gens its pretty hard. I know the second gen 6g72 is pretty different, as in flywheel is on the other side of the engine bay, and the inlet manifold is a different shape. But without physically measuring the deck height etc, i wouldnt be able to pick between the two. But thats just me...

The 3.5L has a different shaped oil pan (the tin pan that bolts onto the alloy sump).
Thanks Jason that what I was look for :D

Jason any chance of a pic ? is the tin pan black or tin/silver colored ?

Na i havnt got any pics of the 2 but once you see them side by side you'll know what i mean, also they wernt painted black per se they were all finished in the natural "EPD" colour (darkish grey/black)

6G74's sit higher in the engine bay, and the ones I've seen have their ignition cables and such clipped onto runners on the inlet manifold, 6G72's seem to clip over the rocker covers or something... Hard to explain without sounding retarded.

My 3.5L plug leads have clipped to the front (1 clip) and rear (2 clips) rocker covers ever since the car was new

The roker covers are the same on both engines with exception to those which have the 3 tabs for the engine cover on those with them
The engine number is located on the lower section of the block against the bell housing, look down from your exhaust manifold, is not that hard to find although may need a bit of a clean
the pan is different on the 2 but I do not have pics, sorry
Aside from measuring the stroke, the engine number is the only real way to tell as they all start with 6g72/4 (in some states the engine number is on the rego papers if you are referring to your original engine)

So exactly why do you actually need to know, are you trying to id your motor or looking to purchase one?
I was looking around a wrecking yard for some bits and peices and from the naked eye I couldn't tell the difference , but I can now!
