View Full Version : Problem with RE Splits - vibration
Sigh.
Took two days to fit my brand new RE Audio XXX6.5 Splits. 10cm deep mount, 12mm of excursion.
Was running the splits on low tune yesterday, turned gains up today a bit more to continue running in.
From the back of the passenger speaker there's a distinct vibrating sound. Sounds like a plastic bag against a speaker port.
Turned gains down to what they were, noise still there (only when turned up).
Things ive already checked:
Baffle
Window/runners
Loose plastic bits
Held the speaker in my hand, and it still done this noise.
There's no distortion from the speakers, just this noise from the passenger one thats driving me nuts.
Any idea's? Im nearly in tears after waiting for months, spending two days to complete the install - and have this happen....

so your holding the speaker in your hand away from the door?
theres nothing in the bottom of the door is there?
can't see much in the door to make that noise
maybe swap the speakers over to see if it's a fault speaker
Yeah held the speaker away from the door.
Definately not the tweeter as i disconnected it to make sure its not the tweeter distorting aswell.
Might just drop these off at the speaker hospital and pray its something like a washer or pin that got attached inside or something lol

Could also be the amp with the left channel. As mentioned try hooking the other one up on that side an have a listen. I have a sub that does that, due to a VC that has been blown to heaven, still has a tiny bit connected to work.
I'll try swapping channels either tonight or tomorrow night.
Im praying its something stuck behind the VC and not a full recone/new VC....
always been keen to play with some XXX splits, any comparisons to anything?
The XXX splits are damn nice speakers.
As for comparisons, dont think I've heard enough speakers to compare to many.
Compared to Boston Pro's (6") the midrange of the XXX wins hands down for me. Very strong, and well detailed. Voices are suprisingly good.
The Tweeters are soft compared to the bostons, though some high's seem to peak a little, this could be either my amp, or the cars acoustics.
The low end gives my Soundstream Tarantula's a run for their money too, slightly stronger midrange, but definately better detailed high's.
The only problem I have with them is the damn mounting depth of 10cm, plus 12mm of excursion.
Managed to fit them with 1mm clearance behind the speaker/window with a 12mm thick baffle, plus 16mm thick spacer, and cutting away majority of the speaker grill/speaker mount, and glueing that in place.

lol
You and your harsh boston tweets :P
Once this is all sorted (please be cheap, and fast lol) and everything is done (nearing the end I swear) I'll pop up for a visit....
Looks like im off to the speaker hospital on saturday morning
I hope its not a recone

So did you find out what was wrong with the speaker?
Man that's what you get on spending too much money on substandard speakers. If you have bought Kenwood you'd be out there pumping that Snoop and doing burn-outs for chicks already.
If they're brand new shouldn't it be a warranty thing?
LOL
Mechanically the speakers are fine.
Got told to turn the volume down a notch :P Currently running these 150wrms speakers at 170wrms.....
The only difference I can find between the left and right speaker is where the tinsel leads go through the cone. Right speakers seems to have them secured through the hole with solder (or silver glue....) left one doesnt - so I'll be putting silicone on the tinsel leads and hoping for the best
oo good ole tinsel lead slap! very logical and explanatory solution to your problem. get em stuck down and youll be fine. just be careful, if you are fixing them to the cone, any weight you add will displace the cone and taint their quality, and for the price they cost, this would be sad.
before you go slapping silicone on, try a tiny square of single side adhesive foam, open cell, just big enough so the tinsels hit that instead of the cone
Good idea...
Got some closed sell foam - might try that, the weight issue did pop into my head while driving earlier tonight though....
I'll take a pic of the tinsel leads to show you where they pass through - well thought out design, I just think someone at the factory forgot to finish the job off and seal the opening lol
Pics of my babies :P
First one is a comparison to Soundstream Tarantula's.
