what are the easiest ways of getting more power out of my TS
and cheaper things are allways nicer:D :D

because im only new to the whole car thing i know my basics and how to do stuff, but i dont know WHAT to do haha

thanks in advance

To be realistic, the only thing to increase power is to get a sports free-flow exhaust for a modest gain in power. To get any other real power gain, you will need some serious money and engine work, which would be much better spent on another car.

Your other best bet is to make sure it is always running in tip-top condition, with good spark plugs and ignition etc. Also if its V6, feed her premium unleaded for a nice little power hike and slightly better economy.

Yep...
Not gonna get much out of these cars..

Get a cat back exhaust and some extractors, and probably an intake (I'll be selling a full S/S CAI setup in about a month keep an eye out) besides that....Look at engine conversions...The asstron isnt very power friendly

Check out the Tech. Features at autospeed.com,lots of good budget mods for exhausts,c.a.i. etc, etc.

thanks zero will look into that

and tuft i will be keeping an eye out for that.. how much you reckon you will be seeling it for

Its not a v4, infact I dont know of any 4cyl that are in a V configuration, just so you dont get flamed later on.

Running premium in an astron (according to the manual) gives more power. I think it jacks it up to 104kw on 95ron, one could assume that on 98ron it would be around 108kw. And then you could try exhaust systems, extractors, higher flow air filter. That is the basics really.

haha thanks parker and umm yeah i was thinking about given all of them a go but not the 95 oct coz its like 20cents more then normal unleaded

Unfortunately power does not come cheap.

the best idea really with the asstron is to flog it off to a P plater and then buy a v6.

um, there are so many threads starting with that exact same question lol

real astron power needs two things...manual and turbo!! apart from that you are pissing in the wind unfortunatly...power and astron are not two words that are commonly heard together if you know wat i mean. at least not any more, back in the first gen days they were pretty good, but since they dropped the v6s into the magnas the 4 bangers are dead weight, slower, less efficent, dont sound as good...

Very true, I tryed playing around with different heads, balance shaft removal, slightly better cams, etc, none of it really made a damn difference. Each time it was just "a bit better" but never really added up to anything except for me, ok well dad, loosing a bucket load of cash.

yeah well i havent really done the basics yet because ive been too busy and i only just bought the car.. but im gonna go through and do some maintenance such as, both fuel filters, air filter, plugs, leads, oil, etc because i dont know how long ago it was all done

its very tempting to turn your first car into a pet and spend way to much cash on it.
with the price of third gen/manual magnas so low, consider saving 2or 3 grand and upgrading.
it really doesnt take that long.

ehh when i was looking for a car i was looking for a good clean and good running magna.. and i found it and im very happy with it.. and im not a hoon that treats their car like **** haha

i wanna spend the money so i can maintain it haha

is there another things i should be doing besides oil, petrol filters, plugs, lead, dizzy thats akll i can think of right now but guys throw a few more in..

cant go past performance air filters and free flowing exhausts for cheap performance
auto trans is your lead baloon right now ,but conversions arent cheap if your paying retail prices.

A good one is to get some carby cleaner, and give the throttle body a really good clean out, they get quite gunky, and it results in rough idle, and slightly less smooth engine and probably a small power loss. Also clean out the breather hoses ( I think the 4 cylinder has the same issue) and the PCV valve.

But sounds like you have got pretty much everything covered, just make sure your air filter isnt too old or dirty and clogged up also.

Don't forget the Astron engine started off as a 1.8 L engine in the GE Sigma way back in 1970 something. Its amazing how much development work has gone into it since then to get the 2.6, but it is not a low friction/high performance motor. Any modifications to increase power - other than improving air flow in/out of the engine - will affect reliability. Other than basic servicing to aid reliability/longetivity there is not much you can do that is cheap. When it wears out buy something modern. HINT: The current Lancer is a nice car!

the EFI models dont have a throttle body do they? and wouldent it be bloody hard to pull off?

Unless I am completely wrong I am quite certain that EVERY fuel injected car has a throttle body? In a carby it is inbult into the carby, however they probably need cleaning up even more than a throttle body anyway.

Its not too much effort cleaning it, depends on if you just detach the plastic air intake and spray and poke around, however even if you pull it off completely and do a full clean it is a little bit of work but nothing too crazy. Somebody will be able to point you to a detailed and pictured DIY guide on this for a 2nd gen V6 floating around somewhere, any car will be very similar.

2 Coolant hoses, 1 vacuum hose, 4 bolts, and the throttle cable end, also the air tubing that goes on the end. Easy to take off, but just get in there with a rag and some carby cleaner and clean clean clean

I agree with most of what has been said, but for a high kilometer engine you are possibly losing power due to blow-by in the cylinders

This can affect the octane rating of the fuel, and you won't get the full performance and power from having the knock sensor

You can fit an air-oil separator, and there is an article on this in Z..m magazine #133

Also, do NOT disconnect air intake resonators, as this will result in a LOSS of torque in the lower revs - I know - I had a TR before the TJ2

Next thing to do is fit a hi-flow air intake filter together with a fuel rail temp tuning kit

Cheers, Barry
