After my father rubbished the stock rods from my TJ2 AWD I thought I'd try and substantiate the claims that they're actually excellent rods. So the research began. I raided my achieves and beat all the info I could from the former MMAL boys and here's the result:
MMAL changed rods in the 3.5s!! The later 3.5s (TJ2 or possibly earlier) received what appears to be the 380 rod. I know you're saying that the 380 has a longer stroke - that's what cranks are for.
See the pics:
Sadly my rod also measures approx 17.5mm across and 12mm deep  Hello Argo?

according to my hayes manual, the 6g72 had forged rods standard? does this only apply to the 2nd geners? those rods do look rather flimsy

Did you get that 3rd pic from the 3si.org website? Been trying to find that for YONKS
I agree though....Look at the size....How thin they look compared to the left ones.

So they went from thick to thin, or from thin to thick?

Thats strange cos ive never come across a 3.5L with "small/narrow" rods.
Now those brand new rods that you sold me (along with the crank) were wide ones and they were "left over" parts from the lonsdale engine plant closure which would make them 2004/2005 parts.
Oh well at least i know all the ones i have are beefy units :)
Also in that side by side picture the pistons look different, the one on the right looks like a short skirted 380 piston and rod. Oh and one other thing the lighter rods were done to cut reciprocating mass on the 3.8L so that it would still rev and be fairly vibration free.
Just remember bigger/thicker aint always better (unless you ask a woman :bowrofl: )

And as i said ive never seen a 3.5L aussie made magna engine with the narrow rods from factory, also all 3.5L aussie made engines had "74" cast into the beam
Its much like the 2GEN 3L 12valve engine there is actually 3 different bottom ends. The locally made version, the Jap made version and then the Jap made RWD version (Triton/Pajero).

Any more 2nd gen V6 info you wanna share love hearing your wealth of knowledge about these things :d

my stock rods are the thin ones. 04/2003 build TJ series 2.
that's why my engine builder wouldn't put them in. too thin he reckoned.
I have pics in my rebuild thread.
cheers,
