Hi everyone,

I'm about to fit a towbar to a TH Magna wagon and would like some advice on the electrics - or more specifically where I can locate the harness connector.

I've picked up what I am told is the correct piggyback connector from a breakers yard but I need to know where I can find the harness connector on the car to fit it onto.

In other posts I've read that it is behind the passenger light cluster but when I take it off, there's nothing there except the bulb connectors.

I'm guessing that the wiring is behind one of the side panels but before I start taking them off, I'd like to know if I'm on the right track...

You;re on the right track. The tow bar will have two connectors at the end of the cable feeding into the boot area. One male and One Female. You unplug the connector that feeds the tail light and plug the matching (opposite sez) connector to this and plug the other tow bar cable connector to the tail light. If you do not have two connectors at the end of the tow bar cable feeding into the boot area, then you need to make one up using a male and female plug.

OK - thanks for the reply and so far so good.

I have the male & female conenctors as you describe all ready to go - but my problem is that I can't locate the connector that feeds the tail lights.

When I remove the light fittings (on both near and off-side) all I can see is a bundle of cables leading back from the bulb holders which disappears thorugh the rubber grommet into the body of the car.

There's not enough slack to pull anything back out through the hole and even if I use a torch I can't see anything that looks like the connector.

I need to find that connector but I'm not sure where to look.

I think it will be behind the rear panel on the nearside of the boot space - but I don't want to start pulling it to pieces if I'm looking in the wrong place.

If my memory serves me correctly the connector your looking for is behind one of the panels that you mention.

It plugs in behind the passenger side rear panel - it's also where the radio aerial is.

Take out the little chipboard side floor panel and then the luggage hook near the tailgate opening. I think you can pull the side panel out then (be careful but firm with the clips that need to release).

You might have to also remove the trim along the bottom of the tailgate opening (where the lock striker is) if it overlaps the side trim panel.

Thanks (and a Happy New Year) Craney

I'll have a couple more coffees and then get the toolbox out!

If I have to remove the tailgate trim too it's not a drama as the whole lot (rear bumper etc) will be being replaced in a few days after someone back-ended me last week.

An inconvenient but timely event seeing as how I was going to have to take it all off anyway to fit the towbar :D

Job's a good'un ... piggyback connection made and all lights working without having to remove rear trim either.

Let's hope this is a good omen for the rest of 2009!

Craney and GTVi - Many thanks for your help!
