hi guys, im fairly new on here was wondering if i could get some advice on my ts magna

its a v6 auto and bought it a few months back but recently it has been blowing smoke, kind of white/blue could anyone tell me whether this would be rings and or valve stem seals, i guess it would be hard to tell unless i took it to a mechanic and maybe did a compression test,
it does it when i take off from from lights and driving when i put my foot down, any advice would be good as i like the car but dont wanna spend big money on it as it only cost me $1500

thanks
rob

If it's doing it when you are accelerating while driving along, rather than after sitting idling for a while, would appear to me to be more rings than seals. With the valve stem seals, the oil leaks past the seals when sitting idling or parked, and burns off when the accelerator is used, but after the initial puff it should all clear. If it smokes when accelerating during actual driving, doesn't fit the bill for valve stem seals.

yeah it is the initial puff when i take off from the lights and it has been idling then goes away, under normal driving it doesnt seem to do it only when i go to overtake, have you a ballpark figure of the cost to fix

If your in VIC, Have a perfect engine here for you for $500 pickup, brand new heads too, PM me.
If not, Spend the $1400 like I did on re-co heads and all the other fancy bits to go with it.

IF you just want the seals done.....Mech's CAN do it but I found none to be willing. Think it was about $500ish

$500, damn I am not charging any where near enough, will have to double my price me thinks

You do not need to take of the heads for valve stem seals, if the motor has done 300+ k then it may be an idea then to also take them off and do the guides and seats but again you can get away without doing this.

I'm pretty sure thats what I was quoted a few years back. Just rang up random mechanics around the area.

happy new year to everyone

i have another question i recently degreased my engine bay as there was oil everywhere and replaced rocker cover gasket and have noticed that the oil is being pushed out of the oil filler cap, so naturally i replaced it but has not made any difference, any ideas??

Check your PCV in the front, as well as the hose. Also check the rear rocker cover. If the elbow blocks up on the rocker cover (which it did on mine) it will blow the oil out of somewhere.
I reckon this is your problem.

I would let the oil come out of the cap, only for the fact of if you block that exit, it's going to want to come out somewhere else, and if it pushes past an oil seal it'd gonna be more of a PITA to fix then an oil cap mate.
Shipping? Not sure But I paid $300 something to get one shipped from NSW > VIC

If you look at your front rocker cover, you will see a hose coming from it, going into the intake manifold. The PCV valve (Positive crankcase ventilation) Sits on the intake manifold, and the hose goes into it.
Cant remember what socket you need to remove it, but take that out, and clean it in carby cleaner, little ball inside it should then rattle freely.

Common problem for the above (Hoses, PCV valve, elbows on rocker covers) to get blocked with crap

Clean your PCV and breather pipes, grab your old iol cap, go to mits and get a genuine seal for about 4 bucks and problem solved

The aftermarket oil caps are crap and always leak

My old 2.6L kept blowing oil out of the cap. When I stopped that problem, it blew out the camshaft oil seal.

It was caused by excessive blowby from the worn cylinders over pressurising the airspace in the rocker cover.

Before all this happened, I had my head reco'd and I still had oil seepage past the seals. Turns out the guys didn't set the seals at the correct height off the deck according to the book. Cost me about $18 (I think) for new seals and I stuck some rope down the sparkplug hole, wound the piston up to it (I don't have a compressor) and replaced them. Was much better after that.
