Hi, my Verada's steering starts whining or groaning after about 10-15 minutes of driving. The bigger the turn, the louder it sounds. I told my mechanic about it and he figured it was the power steering pump, so he flushed the fluid out and put some new stuff in, but that didn't do anything.

So I think I need a new pump, what are my options, and what is it likely to cost? With installation too because I don't have the tools or the know-how. Can I get the pump reconditioned, or what? Where is my mechanic likely to source one from?

Thanks

Pumps can be rebuilt/reconditioned. Not sure of price...perhaps $100(?)

I replaced the pump on my old KR once, not a huge job loosen a couple of belts and hoses and bolts and swap her over.

I picked up a 2nd Hand pump for $45 from a wrecker on www.autoparts.com.au (http://www.autoparts.com.au)

For an exchange pump that has been reco'ed your looking at about 300 bucks with a core deposit, then once you replace it give your old pump back to the supplier and get your core deposit back.

Most Auto stores have access to APS (Australian Power Steering)

Cheap skate, I'll only drink beer or spirits on new years, not whine:)

Had the same problem - whine when warmed up. Went away by itself, I figure there was air in the system. Changed the fluid - used the correct power steering fluid from Mitsu and slackened the belt off greatly. Whine slowly improved, not there anymore. The belt needs to be only tight enough so that the belt does not slip/squeal on full lock. Bleeding the system needs to be done by the book - crank the engine with the ignition coil disconnected - air in the system dissolves in the fluid and causes the pump to cavitate if you spin the engine any faster - sounds like the pump is really rooted when it is not.

Okay thanks guys, there's a wrecker right opposite me so I'll have a look there, a friend of mine is keen to give me hand with it, so I'll give it a go. I had a look in the workshop manual, to see what the pump looks like, but then when I had a look under the hood I couldn't see where it was. Where should I be looking?

And one other quick question, a while ago I busted one of my wing mirrors, I was reversing down the driveway and it hit the meter box along the side of the house. Thankfully the whole mirror housing is kept on by springs so it's fine, but the mirror plate was busted. So I went over to the wrecker and picked a mirror plate up, but when I got home I had no idea how to fit it. It's simple enough to snap the plate onto the ball joint, but I have no idea how I'm supposed get the two little screw-things into their sockets so that the motors can move the mirror. I ended up blu-tacking the mirror into position, but it's not really satifactory. How do I get those fiddly little screws in?
