Hi People. When I lived in New Zealand I had a Mitsubishi V3000 for about a year. It was a bit of an impulse buy at the time and in hindsight i wish i had of waited for a better spec model to come up. The main reason I got it was because it was a 5 speed and they are very rare over there. There were plenty of Diamante auto's but only with the 2.5 engine. These didnt appeal because i think they look stretched and kind of weird.

Anyway the V3000 is the same as the Magna you have here - just rebadged when it had the V6 engine.

The car I had was a 1995 and I understand it was the last model of the shape as it had the slanty slat grill. It had the V6 SOHC engine and was the base model 'executive'. No air con here!

I traded from a 1989 nissan maxima (3.0 V6 auto)

At first it was the ducks guts but after I really drove it I had a few things I didnt like about the engine. It had OK power low - mid rpm but it seemed to run out of huff at high rpm.
For the power it had it seemed to use a fair amount of fuel to the point i had it checked by a mistubishi dealer. They told me to run 96 RON fuel over the 91 as it had a flat spot on the 91 fuel. I guess it had a knock sensing capability?

The gear box was good to use and had well spaced gears. I don't know what the gear ratios are in the manual (someone care to fill me in?) or the diff ratio. It deffinitly didnt have an LSD centre.

Towing with it wasn't much fun as it just seemed to lack the torque most of the time. To give an example I did a trip towing a friends caravan for their parents and used 30% more fuel than the maxima did doing the same trip despite being an auto.

I really liked the shape of the car itself and it had a good comftorble driving position. Plenty of room in the rear and a fairly sizeable boot space.

My main gripes were with the engine. I never really did any research into what other engine came in them but I beleive there was a DOHC version of the 3 litre?

Any comments welcome :)

To fix that running out of puff you need to get a 2.5" mandrel bent cat back exhaust system with a straight through muffler. That will free that up.

For even better mid-high end, get a set of extractors made up (PM me about extractors for this motor I have plenty of info)

Yes the SOHC 12v 6G72 had knock sensors

There is a DOHC 24v 6G72 3.0l V6 which shares the exact same engine mounts as the sohc 12v 6G72, I know as I've done the swap: http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~baker/monster/conversion.htm

If you do want to do that, make sure to get a full front cut, it's the most expensive way..but it's the best, you're guaranteed everything will be there.

I have a similar issue with me 3L with the top end power, it just dies in the arse after peak torque runs out at about 4,500RPM.
But i must disagree with you on the towing issue.
I towed my Boat from Sydney to Brisbane and back again, and averaged 8.6 litres per 100k's and thats towing a couple of hundred kilos of boat and extra boat crap. Economy around town is fine, i get about 10-11 litres per 100k's. I also run 98 octane fuel which helps things along as well.

98 Octane makes this engine so much more powerful. The 3.0 6g72 is very revvy :) Right till redline. I realy like driving the TS sometimes ;) its a nice change. I dont really like the Gearbox some days hehe. There is a bit of a flatspot between 2 and 3 after 1st gear. Thats all I really hate. Who says it runs out of puff at 4500? It doesnt ;) I dont know if its worth doing any mods to the TS, i might just put it all into the TJ. Kill billy what kind of gains would I see from some extractors, exhaust, panel filter and 98 ron fuel, which I use now. Its auto by the way.

Well said indeed. I find my TS to be extremly rev happy after fitting on a K&N panel filter & Lukey rear section exhaust. Heck, even when it was standard she loved to rev! I can't say that I've ever noticed a flat spot between 2nd and 3rd, as I change at about 4000rpm. For example, after I've hit 4000rpm in 2nd, I change to 3rd and the revs drop to 3400rpm, and then it's back up to 4000rpm for the change into 4th. Quite surprising really. I find that I get through first and second normally, and rip through third and into fourth quite quickly. Has anyone else noticed that third is a bit of a 'power gear'? (ie. hit third and bye bye tailgating commodore)

Oh if only us aussies had Dimantes...(sigh)

Prolly a 15kW-20 gain but that's only an approximate guess, I cant guarantee that.

I actually found that 2nd was a power gear too lol

Thanks for the replies guys. I do remember sending a pic of my car once to a website (no idea which one now) and it was put on display with a lot of others. It was a fun car in a lot of ways but I never really got into modding it. At the time I was a die hard nissan fan (who wanted the extra cog) but finding a 5 speed maxima was damned hard. I ended up trading the V3000 on a later model maxima after about 2 years. It was funny this one time. We were on holiday with some mates and I happened to have the spare key for the car still. One of my mates happened to say, 'Hey isnt that your old mitsi?' So we walked down to this carpark and sure enough it was. I waited around a little till the owner came back and i told him i was the last owner and here is the spare key for it. He was a little amazed hehe.

On the towing issue the caravan in question was a twin axle 6 berth jobbie so I shouldnt really complain because a RWD V8 (which should really have been towing it in the first place) would have used the same amount. The things you do when your young and stupid hey :D

Anyway Ive had a look around this forum it looks quite good. None of the usual stuff that goes on with a lot of other forums. Im having trouble getting an avatar pic below 10kb though so Ill have to work on that.
