Hey guys,

well today was the day that i smashed up my TS, im not too happy but ill have to get through haha

The Story:
Going down Diagonal Rd near Coles a heap of cars decided to slam their bloody brakes on and i just simply didnt notice and i ran up the **** of a 2 week old Honda Accord Euro, as he went to turn into the turning lane he as i said put his brakes on and i went up behind him... luckily his car didn't go any further and hit the other cars as i was freaking out about.

The police drove past about 1 min after the accident so they took his details and my details so both our insurance companies didn't get ****ed up with each other (as they do)

LUCKILY!!!!! i have full comprehensive insurance (Budget Direct), but because im only a new driver my excess is about $1400 OUCH!, (the money i just saved up for doing my timing chain, and new brakes all round, and new rear suspension)

The pictures of my car AFTER the accident (the pictures dont show the damage as much as it really is)

http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp12/whippmachine/P020109_1834.jpg

MORE PICS IN NEXT POST

the black bar that sits behind the main part of the bumper is completely pushed into the radiator (its not burst) and there is no room between the right headlight and the battery (thats how far its push back)

ohh and the Honda Accord has a slight dent (but itll probably cost more for the insurance company to replace haha)

comments guys?

and ill let ya's all know what my insurance company says tomorrow when i call em (because i had to wait for the accident report from the police)

At least you're both unhurt.

There's quite a bit of damage there though, what's your car valued at by your insurer?

well i bought it for 1800 so i insurerd in for 2500 because ive added a fair few things eg alarm and radio blahh blahh

why you ask?

and we are lucky we wernt hurt i had my girlfriend with me and the guy also had a passenger (im guessing wife) because i allmost pushed him into oncoming traffic that was doing 80Km/h

unlucky mate
looks like a fair amount of damage, car may be written off

i bloody hope its not written off... but if it is what exactly happens?

Mr_Roberto
02-01-2009, 07:52 PM
if its written off then you'll get paid out what it's insured for less your excess (if its your fault)
you'll be given the chance to buy her back if you want
if you have stuff thats not on the policy you get to keep them, everything that is on the policy belongs to the insurance company

Yep, did you have an agreed or market value on the car?

are you serious, ill get offered to buy it back? but isnt it mine?

veradabeast
02-01-2009, 07:54 PM
You'll probably have to take your car to an assessment centre, where it'll be checked out and they'll work out a rough cost.

If it is written off, they'll send you a cheque for the value, less your excess.

That's how it worked with my 2nd Gen anyway, through NRMA.

Whippy
02-01-2009, 07:56 PM
well im gonna go and check how much ive got it insured for because im gonna be pissed if i have it at 1800 where i bought it mmmm

hopefully they will just repair it

Not if they pay you out, they are essentially buying the wreck from you for the price of the car if it was working/marketable.

Sorry to say it, but it's unlikely. Bonnet, guard, indicator, headlight, bumper cover, possibly the bumper reinforcment, splash guard, radiator rail and all the bracketry. I'm not an assessor or smash repairer, but there's ~$800 in parts there, plus paint and labour.

Firstly glad everyone is ok, and you have insurance.

Now, chances are the car will be an economical write off. Meaning, it will cost more than 1/3rd of its market value to repair. Insurance companies (most) will write the car off as it doesnt make sense to repair it.

As others have said, once this is done, you will get a cheque minus your excess, so lets say $1100. You can then buy the wreck off the insurance company, I dare say they will ask for $1100...

Meaning, you're back at square one, and needing to repair the car for around $1500.

Either way its a lose-lose situation :doubt:

Whippy
02-01-2009, 08:10 PM
well this has really pissed me off now because when i got the insurance i thought that they would freaking fix it but no no haha

well i should wait till the assess it before i jump to a conclusion..

Whippy
02-01-2009, 08:29 PM
well i cant find where i put my form for the insurance saying my market value , so lets just say i put down 1800 and my excess is 1400, how much would i get if i sold it to them if its written off?

veradabeast
02-01-2009, 08:36 PM
If it's written off, they'll pay you the stated value, minus your excess. So, if it's insured value is $1800, and your excess is $1400, your payout will be $400. Once the insurer issues the payout, they own the car. You can't sell it to them. They can sell it back to you.

T_double_U
02-01-2009, 08:46 PM
also some insurance companies will deduct the remaining yearly premium from your payout if it's written off

Because there is a good chance it will get written off.
+1

will need:
new headlight (250MIN?)
new indicator
new front bar - 350 approx?
R/h front guard will need to be pulled off
rad support will need squaring up - repaired and painted
aircon will be degassed and regassed
it will need a wheel alignment too
radiator will be on report for further damage

for only 2500 insured value, the most the insurance company will pay for repairs is approx 1800 bucks...

with older cars, we find that most of them get written off due to how much costs can blow out further on.

hey mate, sorry bout the accident and glad everyone is ok...

$1400 for ur excess!!!!! thats a bit much...

i am with the raa and my excess was $300, but since i am under 25 and less than 3 years on my license it was another $500 on top. so thats $800 all up...thats when i had my accident in august. and that was my fault.

i hope u get to keep it, or if it does get written off and u buy it back from the insurer, just buy another 2nd gen (if u want) and use any parts that are still good...

oh does the engine, transmission and radiator still work ok? or are they stuffed?

hope it all works out for ya,

cheers stuart

p.s i bought my car for $3200 and its worth $4400. and thats for a 1991 kr verada in a very good nic (besides the interior and a few marks , lol)

I would be very happy if it gets written off, at least this way you can spend the money on a new car!

I insured mine for 5grand with a $1400 ish excess.

Hey dude,

Based on the above damage your car is definately a writeoff, try to buy it back cheap and hit up a wreckers for the parts - All you have to worry about then is the rad support.

It may also be worth assessing the damage on the honda, if its under $500 damage I would suggest paying it outright instead of via insurance.

Your car will cost approx $2000 to repair, if you DIY it will cost about $400 (provided you can find the same colour at the wreckers).

This is also why a lot of members here overinsure their cars (ie. mine is worth about 5000, insured for 7000).

$400? Possibly, but depends how savvy one is with a spanner.

02-01-2009, 09:32 PM
well when it comes to the spanner... as long as i have a manual or something to kinda guide the way im fine!

haha im just kinda hoping that they write it off.. because i was about to spend $1500 on it by doing the brakes, timing chain, and all the suspension...

so i could probably save my monies a little bit and buy a newer magna (because i love em) hehe

As sad as it is seeing any 2nd gen being written off (as it was your pride and joy) Just be glad it happened while it was still stock with no diamante front bumpers going to heaven. Shame there wasnt a KR grille on it though, more need to be smashed up.
See how things pan out mate. But think, if you still like 2nd gens....Grab a V6 for about the same price. The you have 3000GT DOHc engine conversions to dream of :)

definatley get a v6 tho, it has more power (manual is better) and i love the roar it has when u put ya foot down... VRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM...lmao...

but a v6 is the way to go

p.s make sure its in good nick too...
mines has the original engine, transmission and heads. :) (none of which are reconditioned either)

Ouch! It's a good reminder that air is free / panels are costly!

Hey I wanted to find out about those auxilliary lights under the bumper-
Are they fogs or driving (& wide or narrow beam)?
What did the light kit cost and what brand?
How difficult were they to install?
If you were able to go back in time, would you select the same brand?

I'm thinking ahead to after summer, and am thinking of installing some fogs - possibly Hella Micro DE projectors, or if those pictured worked well, then a set of those. My distance lighting is already covered by upgraded halogen/xenon globes (Plus 50s). What have other 2nd Genners done here?

doddski
03-01-2009, 05:11 PM
 a 2 week old accord euro is gonna cost a hella lot more than 500 to fix. even just a scratch on the bumper will most likely mean a reskin + paint and will probably be at least 2K.

bumpers dont get reskinned - new items get purchased and painted / fitted up.

and honda accords are VERY expensive to repair - had one get reversed into by a truck (minor bumper damage really) come through work and that was a 2500 repair job, esp considering needed new bar, Reo and then also everything needed painting too - and it was a Pearl.. which ment mega bucks paint. all that for a little dent/hole (was too large to be filled / repaired)

Whippy
03-01-2009, 06:59 PM
yeah well i would have bent a few mounts and stuff under the rear bumper of his car.. and he also had rear parking sensors that were just smashed up
they would have to replace his bumper too... because something on my car like tore it somehow... i really should have gotten photos of his car.

also those lights were from some guy on ebay for 10 bucks brand new.. but ive seen em at supercheap auto for around $50

UPDATE!: well i tried ringing up my insurance company today but they are only open mon-fri for the claims dept (its funny how its 24/7 for the sales hmm:nuts: ), so i have to wait till monday to start sorting it all out

today i realised that my bonnet was only being held down by the secondary latch (the one for your finger) so i pulled my front grill off and wired it all up good so it wont fly up on me hehe. and of course i put the grill back on, just for the looks:D

Life
03-01-2009, 07:07 PM
yeah thats what i meant, they replace the plastic part isn't that the bumper skin?
All depends on the car, friend of mine had a TJ and decided to go for a brand-new front bar, was 350+200 paint - so total repair cost - $550 with a brand spanking new bar. This was back in 03 (was an 02 TJ).

it depends on what 3rd gen u r after.

u can get te's and tf's between $1500 and $5000. well, thats what i have seen in the tradingpost, carsguide and even ebay
.
or if u save up enuff, u can get a th between $4000 and $8000 or there abouts.
but if u want a tl/ tw, u will need at between $8000 and $13000 plus. round a bouts anyway.

if u just want a car to get to work (unless u can walk there) it be better to save up... or gon in the lottery and try and get something that way, lol

hope that helps ya.

or even go for a verada if you can.

cheers stuart

Sorry but thats a dumb question...
Only way YOUR going to find out if if YOU drive one. Hell they are 10 years newer how do you think they are, they are faster, and nicer generally. (not when I'm done:cool:  )

Take a few for a test drive. 3L's, 3.5L's, Autos, Manuals....make up your own mind hey

3rd Gens are ALOT nicer in my opinion. My sister has a 2nd Gen and I have a 3rd and the 3rd gen is just so much more modern for its age. (There is only like 3 years between my sisters and my magna but mine seems so much newer and nicer to drive). Its so smooth and the stock audio system is a third gen sounds a ton better than a 2nd gen.

Now that I have owned a 3rd Gen, I would never even consider buying a 2nd gen.
Thats my 2 cents

No one would considering the prices of them now.
Also have to consider a 2nd gen is circa 1991....compared to a 3rd gen which is 1996...not much changed in the 2nd gens..

3 years back though....alot of people would be tossing up between the two due to the high price still of a 3rd gen.
now for $2000 you'll get one.

for me, the comfort of a 2nd gen is better for me (more comfy). but i do agree with the power of the 3rd gens... if only i could put a 3rd gen v6 in a 2nd gen, lol...that be cool...

okay there you go guys... what is driving a 3rd gen like compared to a 2nd gen?

I owned a TR V6 Manual. This was a very nice drive, especially with premium unleaded! I kept it for 11 years, then moved into a TJ 3.5 auto. The immediate difference noticed was the extra grunt. Now I have a TJ AWD, which is the best car I've driven.

The main penalty you'll pay, especially compared with a 4 cyl gen 2, is extra fuel consumption - the laws of physics demand this because of the extra weight and engine power.

What the crap ? Whats the point in insuring the car for a certain amount if they are going to screw you over when you have an accident ?

If he comes over and says some bull**** answer kick up a fuss and let him know how much you insured it for because thats not fair.

they said that they have a different department (after its gets written off) to sort out how much the car is worth.. but the woman that i spoke to said that you can get a better price then they offer me so thats good

so as i said before i still have to wait until tuesday ATLEAST to find out whats bloody going on..

but its handy have a car so i can look around at other cars while i still have it. so thats a plus
