Hmmmm......the spare I carry in Chaser is a 16 and my rims are 18's so if I get a flat it seems pretty useless...so I should ditch it? Or should I ?
What about the spare in my TR its probably been sitting there for a few years its probably gone hard and probably isn't roadworthy . Why not ditch it ? Rely on the NRMA or buy a Tyre inflater thingo...
I haven't had a flat for 6 or 7 years or more....new tyres seem pretty well puncture proof.
Anyway....opinions :)

as long as the rolling diameter is the same on all the wheels, it should be sweet

Ditch it.
I pay money every year for the RACV so if i have a blowout thats what they are for. besides save weight less fuel etc etc

Careful you don't jinx yourself, I said that a while back and had 3 flats between my 2 cars in about 10 days lol
If the cops really want to, they can defect you for not holding a spare. It is illegal in NSW not to have a spare. Thats what my gfs dad (a cop) has told me anyways.

Yes, its also illegal to not have it secured either, otherwise they become a UFO (unwanted flying object)

Pretty sure in Vic you dont have to have one (correct me if Im wrong please), but remember something about it when my old car got defected about not having to one but if you did it had to be secured down properly and in roadworthy condition.
Edit: please disregard as the Op isnt in Vic

I run a 16" steel spare wheel with my 18" alloy road wheels
No probs if the OD is the same or very similar

I don't carry a spare 24/7...
between racq and my mobile phone a friend i've never been stuck and i've had a couple of flats since i stopped carrying a spare due to my stereo install..
however if I'm going more than an hour from home I chuck the spare in the boot (secured by a jockey strap.) along with jack and tools..
I still have more boot space by carryingthe spare like ths than I usd to with a standard 2x12" sub box in the boot

']Ditch it.
I pay money every year for the RACV so if i have a blowout thats what they are for. besides save weight less fuel etc etcGood point - only problem is that you can change the tyre and be on your way. Or you can call RACV and wait 45mins. I have RACV too (wouldn't be without it) but sometimes fixing it yourself is quicker.

No probs if the OD is the same or very similar...:stoopid: That's what I'd do.
If you can have a spare (even a steelie like above) then that's what I'd do.
If you have a boot set up (amps, etc.) that need to spare well - then I guess RACV (or equivalent) is the way to go.

Never had a spare for 2 years...and was fine...
You gamble on the chance yes....It's the risk you have to take.

I'm pretty sure the spare adds some structural strength to your cars ass. As if some one has a big hit up your ass you are going to be screwed. My doner car had a big rear hit. Wheel wel has been crumpled. A spare would have added a lot of strength
