View Full Version : Taking it all apart

Can someone shed some light on how to get access to the cable channels down the sides of a TJ? Do the scuff plates come off completely? I can see there is a clip at each end which is fine, but how does the rest come off? It doesn't seem to want to.

Also, since the tech tips part of AM isn't up yet, can someone point me at a concise guide of how to get the centre console apart? I've searched the old forum but most references are "go look at the tech tips on AM".

Thanks guys.

Ok I worked out the scuff plates.. they do come off - four big nasty plugs underneath. But I'm still having issues with the centre console..

So I had another go.. and I can see there is are two clips beind the top air vents.. the one on the right came out easy enough but the left one doesn't want to budge. Is there a trick or should I just force it harder?

I know plenty of you lot have done this before.. can anyone lend a hand?

Dude, when I did my TH, the entire upper assy' came out a little way
after jiggling, levering etc. Took the fascia off ( this was a bastard,
there's about 5 clips at the bottom ) and painted it.
The actual vents have to be lined up to reassemble
as they are held between ass'y and fascia.
Lined up vents, clicked fascia back in nicely and I was cheering :dancin:
Went to sit ass'y back in. LHS went in beautifully BUT the RHS
will not go in all the way. Must be something to do with a cable
or whatever behind the vent switch. I would say don't pull that
bit too far out like I did.
So, I'm still struggling with it

The bottom section is easy, sounds like you've done that already.
If not, say so and I'll give you the clues

If by the bottom section you mean where the gear stick lives, yeah, I've got that sorted :)

Ok, so it sounds like there is nothing but clips holding the top vent assembly in? In that case I'll just have to put some more force into it.

Does that top bit have to come out before the plate with the HU and aircon controls comes out? What about the bit with the cigarette lighter and ashtray, what's holding that in?

thanks for your reply.

Once you get the gearstick bit out of the way, you'll see two slots at
the bottom of the ashtray bit. Get a flat blade in there, once they are loose
the upper part of it pulls out.

Now you can see two screws at the bottom of the HU part. There's also two screws
at the top of that bit. To get at them, you need to get the vent bit out a little bit.

Once all 4 screws are out, the whole HU bit can come forward. There's a plug for
the hazard lights, when thats out you can pull it forward a bit more.

Also, from memory there are two screws at the very top of the vent bit. You just need to loosen them a bit to get the vent fascia off (plus clips)

Importantly, be cool and don't force anything too much. A torch is good. You will probably be swearing at crazy Japanese engineers for designing such a thing, and maybe the dickhead who posted such crap instructions, but that's normal lol

Put some cloth or something at the bottom of the whole deal so any clips that come off don't disappear into the guts of the thing

There may be an easier (proper?) way to do this, but I searched the forums too and couldn't find anything. Good luck!!

I'm not sure what you mean by the two slots at the bottom of the ashtray section.. there are two slots there but they just seem to be where the clips from the gear-shift part of the console slot in to..

There doesn't seem to be anything holding the lower part of the ashtray section because it moves freely in but the top bit won't budge easily. What am I doing wrong?

I second that!!!

The pain i caused while drinking and posting is amazing!

Here Is how i think i did mine...

Section A: comes right off since its held by clips (remember to move the gear changer cover thingywhich just clips off as well first). Just disconect the 2 globes and the pos and neg terms of the cigeretter lighter

Section B: I think its held by 2 screws at the top (highlighted by red) that are found Under the air vents? plus its cliped in as well. Then the whole section b came off (cept where the radio is held) and all you do once its seperated from the fan controls as well is to seperate the wire from the hazard switch and the whole section b comes off.. then you will see the metal frame with the Radio attached by four screws.. undoo them and its off

Section c: never took it off?

Thats how i took my centre console off?? and damn it was a ***** to put back on!! and as the other post said.. dont loose any clips!! use a sheet or something!

Thanks guys. I'll give it a go tomorrow after work.

magnaman, your Section A.. it just doesn't feel like it is clipped in. Oh well.. how much can a new ash tray section cost if I bust it? ;) I'm starting to think that when the guys who installed my head unit put the console back together they super glued it because they busted all the clips lol lol

well that section for me.. comes off After you take the Middle gear box plastic cover section off
Pics as follows: Close up of the clips.. thats all i can see that holds it Along with the pic of centre console showing the centre Middle gear box cover taken off which just Lifts up.. just grab the spare change(?) section and lift and it should come off releasing section A to be pulled out...

(dude i hope my cars not different!)

The middle gear box cover thing has to be taken off first!! i dunno what its called but its The plastic part that covers your gear stick along with cup holder and that spare change section thing(?)

This is what my book states:
Sound System
To Remove and Install
1 Ensure that the ignition is Off and the sound system security code is available
2 On manual tramaxle models, unscrew the gear lever knob.
3 On Verada models, proceed as follows:
A) Open the coin tray lid and firmly pull the coin tray from the
console. Disconnect the wiring connectors from the base of
the accessory socket.
B) Pull the cup holder from the front of the console.
4 Grasp the rear edges of the console fascia panel and pull upward. Working toward the front of the console, raise the fascia panel, releasing the retaining clips. When all of the clips are released, manoeuvre the fascia panel from the console.
5 On Magna models, remove the ashtray from the vehicle. Pull the ashtray surround panel partially from the dashboard, disengaging the clips retaining the surround to the dashboard. Disconnect the cigarette lighter wiring from the base of the socket and remove the surround.
6 On Verada models, pull the ashtray assembly, disengaging the clips retaining the surround to the dashboard. Disconnect the cigarette lighter wiring from the base of the socket and remove the ashtray.
7 Remove the screws retaining the bonnet lever to the driver side lower dash panel and position the lever clear of the work area. Remove the screw cover from the top of the panel. Remove the lower dash panel screws and disconnect the panel from the top left side of the dashboard. Partially remove the panel and if applicable, rotate the footwell lamp bulb holder anti clockwise and separate it from the panel. Remove the driver side lower dash panel from the vehicle.
8 Disengage the vent control inner cable from the linkage on the heater unit. Disconnect the clip retaining the outer cable.
9 Grasp the centre vent assembly and pull from the dashboard, disengaging the retaining clips. Ensure that the vent control cable does not get caught when removing the vent assembly from the dashboard.
10 Remove the screws securing the radio surround panel to the dashboard.
11 Partially remove the surround panel and sound system and disconnect the wiring and aerial lead from the rear of the sound system.
Thats what the book says... and hell it seems hard!! but umm... i didnt take all those panels out...

Awesome. Assuming there is no super glue I'm sure I can get it apart this time. I'm pretty sure the TE-TJ are exactly the same inside so the instructions should be the same. I just didn't want to put too much force into it unless I was sure there were only clips.

Many thanks.

Yay. I got it apart. :dancin:

Thanks for your help guys.

Might take some photos now and knock up a few howtos for any other newbies..

A guide would be nice. I just pulled mine apart for cleaning / exploration before new head unit..

I used the bottom up method.. remove cup holders, remove ashtray, attempt to remove controls... gave up.

The problem I've found is that the airvents/display seem to be 'loose' now.. even though I only wiggled them a bit (didn't remove them).. how are they supposed to be held in?

Also, nobody seems to mentions the vent control cables. Does anyone remove these for the top vents / air vent knob?

How do you get the controls out without moving the airvents at all? They have some sort of clips that go under them. I had to dislodge mine to get the controls out... and in doing so the air vent bits wobbly on one side :(

If you want, you can get the airvents out using a screwdriver to prise them out from one side. I saw it in a manual, but looked pretty deadly so I didnt bother.

I found once the centre controls were loose, there's enough room to get to the screws on the top. You don't need to prise it open that much
