View Full Version : How to install front speaker grille!

I just bought some HSK 165's components and I would really like to use the grille that came with the speakers instead of using the crappy plastic grey mitsu one. The problem is, that mitsu have the grille in a shape that is just plain annoying so i cant just stick the new grille where the old one is without bending it or something.
How did you guys go about doing this?

I dont think anyone has mounted an aftermarket grill.

Too complicated, plus the stealth look is a lot safer :)

wouldnt bother with it mate
wont see it behind the door trim

Same goes for all my speakers.

What do you mean?
Im talking about the actual speaker grille that came with the components! I can screw it on the door trim thing where the old one was, but it doesnt sit right because of the curvy shape of the original mitsu grille!
I thought about heating up and bending the new grille into shape, but that will be hard work and will prob affect the warrenty on the speakers..... rgg

oh i thought you still had the stock one on, my bad
but yeah just leave the stock one on to make it look factory
well as in the car looks stock from the inside and also people cant see what you've got, so they dont break in to steal it

Exactly! Hence why I haven't put that Focal sticker up on my window.

Ahh ok well ill just leave the stock on then! Although my tweeters kinda make it obvious that they are not stock.... lol
They are sitting up on the dash so everybody who looks in can easily see them (Well in the little cup things that come with the tweeters for mounting).... hmmm

Can't you fit yours into the tweeter pods?

like those?

But isnt it going to be difficult for somebody to get the speakers out of the door? They would have to take the door trim thing off, get past the dynomat, and then have a screwdriver handy to unscrew the speaker...Doubt this could be accomplished very easily...

Nah, my tweeters were too big and also i have drilled the 'cups' into were the little covers where the 4" drivers go in some magna's//so if i did ever stick my tweets into pods, i would have hideous looking covers :(

Mate, they're not going to take it off gently.

They'd probably pull on the door trim till it breaks, quickly unscrew the speakers from the mounts and rip them out of there.

If i was stealling your speakers i could have the door trim off in about 2 seconds. and the speaker out in about 10.

Aftermarket grills WILL NOT FIT without a huge amount of work. and at the end of the day they will look ****.

Go to mitsu and buy the tweeter pods. $30 a pair new from mitsu spare parts

According to the hertz site the tweeters only 1" diameter. you should deffinately be able to put that in there

WHAT?!?!?
The guy at mitsu told me that you couldn't buy the pods seperately, and you had to get the tweeters, and that they were 100+ EA!?!?!

Grrr so pissed now, I just mounted them on my dash too

I just bought some last week Mits in springwood. But after doing all that, I wouldn't change them if I were you, unless you got new top inserts from a wrecker.

Those pods are just the trick, aim the sound right at you, makes a heap of a difference. And look so Stock....But real neat....
I order them at 9 AM and picked them up at 1 PM. New years Eve.. $37.00 though

Pretty sure it'd be fine, because the only hole I put in them is for the cables, I used the sticky tape stuff to stick em there, on top with the angled cup thingo..

That's funny, springwood's the place that told me they don't sell them seperately .

But yeah, I don't think I'd be stuffed moving all the cables around, already soldered it in under the dash with the crossovers..
Meh, at least they sound good :D

Yeah.. Might save it for sometime when I've got the day off work and I'm really bored.. like yesterday lol

Where do your cables go then? Just drop down into the main part of the door trim with the speaker?
That would've been soooo much easier than ripping out the glove box and finding the cable then cutting it up etc.

I succesfully ran two new wire pairs through the rubber grommets into the doors, and put it all back as before, and left the stock wiring in place, if I ever want to return it to factory.

Sycrat
07-01-2009, 06:55 AM
That works too haha.
How did you connect up a new pair to the head unit? I thought it all just went through the wiring harness..

SH00T

I had wired in the Aerpro adapter, and interfered with it from there. So, you guessed it, I can return to stock..

Most tweeters are too thick for the standard pods, I'm going to put mine here like wollongongVerada (Mark) did. There is plenty of clearance and if done right it looks factory.

Really??? Arrrgg...Maybe i have to find some way to get them out of these cases then, coz when i meansured with a ruler they were 1.5".. hmm

Does mitsubishi sell the two little circle things that go where the 4" would go in some verada's?? Coz mine will have loads of holes if i now go and buy the pods..

yeah, my eclipse tweeters pretty much filled the whole pod
just angled them right so i could just clip the pod onto the door
theres abit of room in there ;)

Ok i have decided that i will go and buy some pods as soon as i get some more monies.

Do mitsu sell the round speaker covers that go on the dash for where the 4" midbass drivers are supposed to go??? Coz i have ruined these as i have mounted my tweeters on them and so i will now need replacements....

Are you able to go to a wrecker near you? I guarantee you that'll be cheaper than going to mitsubishi.

i doubt that the hsk-165 tweeter will fit into the standard delta pods...they are kinda big ( site says 1" diameter but thats only the cone area... i would say closer to 1.5- 1.75")

You mean low cost? I paid $450 for my HSK 165 comps (thats with 10% discount coz of after chrissy sales..). is that low? :O

But i really want to know if my tweeters with fit before i go and buy some pods...

are the genuine mitsubishi tweeters any good? anyone know the output on them?

i found these on ebay... worth getting?

Just an FYI,

Regarding those round circles/pods in the top of the dash, that take an approx 3" midrange speaker in Verada's, Sports etc:

- the Workshop Manual advises they are levered out of the dash by gently inserting a slender screwdriver etc down the edge and lever gently up and out. maybe try padding the implement with some thin soft cloth to aviod marring the dash vinyl. Just in case OP wants to seek some replacements at wreckers etc.

- the Mitsi Clearance Centre in Adelaide has/had "Infinity" speakers for this location (better quality than the "standard" Magna/Verada dash speaker), at the princely sum of $5- each. I plan to upgrade my Sports and Verada dash speakers with the 3" infinity ones. A search in here should reveal a pic someone put up, the magnets etc on the Infinity looked far larger than the standard ones, and from memory they had capacitors etc (for x-over) mounted under the speaker near the magnet, so i assume they are just wired direct to HU (or so I am hoping).

so those circle caps on the dash are actually there for speakers? thats the use? i was worried they might be connected to the aircon or something.

yep,

the dash circles were used in models which came with 8-spkr audio system (2 rears, 2 doors, 2 delta-pods, 2 dash) - my early KJ Verada ei uses the dash speakers - instead of weird round vinyl you see speaker cloth!!

Cars with 6-spkr audio (such as my TJ Sports) had the delta-tweeters but not the dash mid-range speakers.

hmm, maybe further down the line i'll put some speakers in there. for now i'm gonna go to the mitsubishi place and try to get some of the tweeter pods... then i'll find some tweeters that fit in it since i'm assuming the genuine tweeters will be just as poor as the genuine door and rear speakers (they were 15watt!)
