say i can source one from bosch nice n cheap.
is it a big job? like... cost wise and labour wise. i myself with my neighbour (who is a mechanic) and have managed quite well to keep it all going nicely, and replace the stuff that needed fixing, but just wondering how difficult itd be to do the timing belkt (and fan belt while im at it)
car just ticked over 105,000 so new timing belt is due.
cheers

I have just done mine and while it was pretty much straight forward you must follow the install procedure for the tensioners otherwise it may go pair-shaped.
Don't skimp with the the tensioner and pulleys either. You won't wanna pull it apart again.

Get the pulleys as well, you also need a special tool and small torque wrench to tension it.
I have had a couple of members now have their car towed to me a week or sooner later when all has gone wrong to have the heads off and new valves installed
Be careful you get it right, the entire kit is not all that much and is well worth the spend

I just did mine. However my engine was sitting on a pallet. Had to remove engine mount remove other 2 belts. And remove crank Pully. Remove belt covers.
I used white out liquid pen to mark on the belt where the timing marks are on the cam gears and the crank. Remove the belt and trace the marks onto the new belt. And install.

Probably sticking with the mechanic if your unsure, they are resonably complex, because of the timing etc, that and the mechanic has insurance (well should do) so it wont cost you $$ if it bends valves

If you supply the parts and only want belt and tensionor pulleys done, I will do this for $200 bucks.
I am also able to supply the parts if you need them as well

Hey im only new to this site so hi everyone:bowdown: , i've been doin some research on timing belts as i've just hit 105000kms on my tj vrx an I have always done my own services but this major service is quite complex for me as im not that mechanically minded, got some quotes which include your standard service but replacement of all six spark plugs (platinum) and timing belt. MITSI dealer quoted $1100, another mechanic (supposedly a mitsi specialist?) had recommended i change the crank and cam seals as well and maybe even the water pump while he is at it for $1400.

PM me mate, I can do better than that, cam and crank seal is part of the belt change anyway, comes in the kit.
The 100 service I do all filters, coolant, oil, trans, spark plugs, timingbelt (seals and tensioners), brake fluid, clean TB, adjust hand brake and full check over. There are a few hours involved here but is the most critical service the car will get.

Hey Mad Magna, out of interest should I be doing the water pump at the same time as the timing belt? It is around $300 for the part, or is it one of those things that if it is fine leave it? I have never had a water pump go on any car I have owned.
Thanks,

Thanks,
300 bucks for a water pump? you are on crack if you buy a mitsi one. They are about 100 for a Protex unit, which is same thing different stamp on the casing.
But yeah as a precaution i would change it, saves double labour

Wow, I wish I could charge 300 bucks for a water pump lol who ever quoted that is sniffing glue.
With water pumps it really depends on the milage of the current pump and the condition. If your current water pump is tight in the bearing, smooth and not noisy you can leave it but then again as a new pump is only about $130 (I use GMB which are Japanese made) I usually recommend they get done, if one leaks the glycol in the coolant can damage the belt so you are not only up for a new pump 60k's later but also another belt as well

Thanks guys (Madmagna & Magna00) I was just doing some "research" and was talking to the local Repco (aka Ripoffco) people and they quoted $316 for a water pump. I did ask what the?? (the only water pump I ever (and dad over 45 years) ever replaced was like $130 for a AE86 twin cam corolla (his "hobbie car") so thank you for your help!!!! The wife & I are thinking of a trip to the lovely land of Vic later this year Mad Magna so you may have a future interstate customer :)
