Anyone had experience with 'Ultimate' gas shocks?

I have ordered a set of KYB's for the front of my car, but my supplier is out of rears and is offering me two rear shocks for $200 + $10 post.

I am not that fussed about having a different brand in the rear of my car but i thought I would check out with the ever-knowledgeable AMC

i might be fussy but id personally prefer to have the whole car in the same brand..

I am thinking the same thing.

Anyone got any good Sydney contacts to get my hands on some rear KYB shocks for under $250?

I bought KYB rears for $70 each from R&E Auto. I'd hang out for the KYB rears to get back in stock.

Never buy anything without good info on what you are actually getting. KYBs are very-established as IMO the best option in that pricerange, stick with them.

from what the guy at AUssie auto told me, Ultimates are a purpose built shorter stroke shock made by Munroe and are better suited to lower then stock springs. They apparently have a larger bore and can be brought in adjustable form. These facts are merely word of mouth and i have never actually seen them.

I opted for the GT-Gas Murnoes since id had them before and they offer a grreat warranty, which i needed when both front shocks blew after a massive pot hole on the highway ate them. They were on the car for 2 days and i was doing 1XX km/h and the pot hole was more like a shelf in the road from roadworks.

I'm looking a new shocks and looking at the Monroe GT reflex.
I had Monroe gt's about 4 years ago in my KH and found the very hard/heavy duty.
Aparently with this reflex tech in them bought in a year or so ago, they have softened them up a lot. Anyone comment? Compared to stock shocks?

OK since the original question is answered - thread hi-jack.

How much for new shocks all round? KYB or stock items? Car isnt lowered, just shocks are showing their age slowly.

Well KYB you are looking at about 200-220 for the fronts and 150 for the backs seem to be 'good' prices.

Check eBay there are some cheap ones at the moment.

Talking abot these, will have the prices confirmed for you, just making sure they have quoted on the proper ones for you.

The Ultimates, I am not sure, the monroe site does not list them, has GT Sport and GT Gas only, both run the reflex valve

If you are running GT Sport, these are specially made to suit Kings

I currently have KYBs, not bad. But I'd say not as firm as when Pedders Sport Ryders were new. Have had Monroe GTs in different car before and found them nice and firm, will be my next choice again.
Those Ultimates? Never heard of.
Any good brand damper is better than stds. But of course the whole suspension package matters.

Ok new question good people.

I have been advised that I should consider putting in new front strut tops, I rung around and only mitsu have them for 110 a side trade price.

Is this absolutely necessary, mine seem to be in ok condition, and can I get them anywhere cheaper?

Thanks in advance

Just a thought, since the front struts are interchangeable with 3rd gens, should I get a quote from another model?

Cheers

You can get aftermarket ones but only if you really need them.

I couldn't seem to get my hands on aftermarket ones...... I am thinking of skipping changing them this time, they aren't obviously worn and its $220 I don't have this week

Is your suspension noisy in the front?
Thats how you usually tell if they are on their way out. Small bumps/cats eyes/little pot holes will make a clunk/knock noise from the front end.
If your suspension is dead quiet then dont worry about it, but if it is a little noisy then its a good time to do it while the strut is out.

Well my shocks are buggered beyond buggered, they rattle like nothing else especially at the front... I suppose it would be hard to differentiate between shocks rattling and strut top joints rattling.....

When I changed the springs a few months back I had the strut tops off and they didn't feel noticeably loose (Although the shocks were sliding back into themselves!)

I've got ultimates in my girlfriends TR exex they cost me $120 for the par, they don't seem too bad. The cars got 17's on it and it rides fine

Thanks Perry, I have rear KYB's on the way to me now.... didn't realise they would be so much cheaper than the fronts and I found some on ebay :D

Still undecided whether or not to change strut tops......

This car is just a black hole of money
