Hi,
I'm just wondering if someone can help me.
A few weeks ago, I was told by the mechanic that my 96 magna had a cracked head which he fixed, I got it back and a week later just before xmas it over heated again, While I was interstate, my house mate took it to a different mechanic as the one who dealt with the car at first was on holidays. He said it was the rear welsh plug He said it was corroded.

Can someone please tell me if they know how much am i looking at for this to be fixed. I know that welsh plugs themselves a quite cheap......I just want a rough idea.

Also, he charged me $1400 to fix the engine, originally he wanted $1600. Does this sound about right?

Any response would be greatly appreciated.

Maelsa:)

I replaced all the welch plugs on my TP at the start of the year with brass ones. make sure you get brass ones put in so they dont corrode! Er, the price was about $10ish each if I remember. It's a tricky job cos a lot of it is behind then engine etc, so I dunno what labour would cost, maybe a hundred or so?

Thanks for the reply.............I thought i would be looking at hundreds, someone said probably around 600 or so.........that freaked me out a little, and also thought it was quite alot just for the labour. I will ask them to replace them with brass.
Really appreciate your time.

it could well cost more. I'm not too up to date with 3rd gens/service costs since I have a first gen, and do most work myself. but I imagine that a fair few parts will need to be removed to get to the back ones... So maybe will be more, I wouldnt think 600 though... I did mine while the motor was out of the car. It was a peice of cake then hehe.

Good luck with it mate,
-Matt.

i changed the welsh plugs in my TF had to take out the passenger side driveshaft, gearbox comes out, clutch, and flywheel. i think thats 5 hrs in and out and sometimes the plugs can be fun to get out to.

The rear one is a 43 mm plug, you should ideally do all of them at once but that will mean taking the engine out and will be quite expensive

The rear plug does not need to have anything taken off, the front needs the exhaust manifold removed from memory

Be interesting to know if it was a chacked head to begin with as with the third gens cracked heads are almost un heard of
