So i did this today, its a fairly easy mod, it took me around 10-15 min to do. i was sick of the green lights so this tut will go through making them red. or whatever color you like. no LED's needed.

We start off with pulling the center console piece out, easiest way to take it off is by pulling it up from #1 area, untill the 4 clips will come up and slide out away from the dash

now i shouldve done this before i pulled the gear surround face off, but youll need to firstly take the gear knob off, there is a screw at the front, and 2,3 and 4 are clips you pull away from the main gear surround piece...and pull towards you as arrow shows and lift from the circle. it in there pretty good, so use a little force if you need to
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/jbzonda2/facepulloff.jpg

now the face of the P R N D, etc piece has a sticker on the back which you need to take off. i got a spare from the wreckers so i have the original just in case. left one show what it will look like with the sticker taken off. EDIT: you can pickup the whole gear surround assembly for cheap, i paid $12 for mine

now i want mine to appear white, but at night glow red. so we need a piece of red and white semi-transparent paper or plastic. i improvised a little, and went down to Officeworks, and got myself these:

Laugh if you wish (lol) but all they are is a A4 display book with a white transparent backing and a set of colored tabs, and im using the red tab. they are just as effective..as...i guess the expensive alternative
total cost for this to is around $2.50

so form there i cut the white and red into the right size and stick it on the back of the P R N D piece. the white is good enough to block out the red behind. this is what it should roughly look like:

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/jbzonda2/backingfinal.jpg

place it all back together and this is the final result:

Daytime look, looks standard other than no Green N:

night time look, nice and red!!

i think using red paper/plastic is more effective than having white paper with a red LED, the LED is not that bright, so there is no need to replace the glove that is used to light it already

total cost around $10.00 for the bits from office works and the spare P R N D piece. (sorry dont know what its called!)
ill take a better picture of it at later at night, rather than a jumper over my head!
enjoy!

You could probably cut away and stick back on the 'N' part to retain its original green colour.

But good work - it's the only lit part of the dash that's green - everything else is like yellow/white.

Oh, i like the chrome surround btw! lol

Very nice little mod!
Inexpensive, Subtle, but makes a big difference, I like your thinking boy.

haha yeh chrome surround aint bad :P

i was thinking of making the 'N' green but it looks alot cleaner all white. or rather, when its lit up i could make it so the 'N' is white and the rest red that could look quite effective

Most Excellent. Looks amazingly effective, from your photos. Nice clear instructions for others to follow, too.

Thanks heaps for the idea, and an excellent write-up!!!

I have found that it has a bright spot, where the globe sits, so L, 2, 3 and D are alot brighter than R, N and P.
if i place an extra piece of white plastic over the 4, it might look dodgy, so im thinking i will make the N white, to set apart the bottom 4 to P and R.

hopefully that will fix that issue, will post pics up.

A single led will not be. I Used a 12cm led strip(one for each side on mine. However your trick seems to look ok

I did this little mod myself too yesterday.
I encountered the same problem with section of it being brighter than the rest.

I used white backing with a white globe. So, i added extra backing behind L,2,3 and D to reduce the light from these.

Will see how it looks tonight - i think it should work.

let us kno how that goes, i planned to do that.

will you be making the N white or red so there doesnt seem to be a jump in brighness from D to N? thats the only thing im worried about when i get to it

I cut the green from the original backing and used that for 'N'. LED strips you can get from ebay.

Will post once it gets dark.

I just did this mod, looks awesome! I put a piece of white over the N, and red over the rest.

Would this work for the speedo and gauges too, or is replacing the lights behind the only way to do it?

replacing the lights is the easy way to do it, would only take 10min and the bulbs are easy to access. you can open up the speedo and probably chnge the color without having to change the light, but i havent attempted to pull it apart as such.

Wow thats a quick little mod that makes a statement! Now thats a classic. Saves the LED strip lighting method....updates on difference in brightness would be great.

i placed an extra pice of red behind L,2,1 & drive. it was an improvement but you could still see a little difference.

what i did instead was make N clear (well yellowy/orange because of bulb color) to separate the 2 sections of red, and it looks fine!

im thinking of getting some sort of ice blue t10 bulb that will hopefully give me a cleaner whiter N.
