Hi all I have recently bought a 4cyl auto TE and the auto seems very sloppy on the upshifts and a bit harsh on the downshifts. The upshifts seem to be slipping. Is this normal, and will it need to be fixed professionally of can I service and adjust it(im pretty handy on the tools). Any info on the possible prob and its remedy appreciated. BTW its got 155000 kms and the trans fluid looks red and smells ok. Cheers shaun

if its shifting hard and slipping. sounds like it needs a service. A tranmission specialist should only charge bout $80. including oil, n filter n labour. only a few hour job.

Get a professional service, you will not regret it afterwards

looks like you need an ATF flush and fresh ATF. mitsu charges abt $150 while midas slightly cheaper. it's a job that wastes hell lot of fluid cos they use fresh fluid to run through the whole system and those are wasted. but the flush should do the job. check your auto-dipstick to see the colour of the fluid... reddish is new fluid, brownish is acceptable but if it's coffee brown you better get it changed. and it shouldn't smell burnt. if you go mitsu, make sure they change your filter as well cos it's included in the service. the last time i did mine they didn't change the filter and when i asked them why they went 'you don't need a new one'. i said well i don't care cos it's included in that price and i want a new one irregardless.

Is the service side of the trans something I can do myself! Just drain the oil and replace the filter. I spoke to LOTS of trans specs and they all say dont bother with a flush. Just service.??????..Apparently theres not alot that can be done about the shifts as it could be in the PCM?????(some fuzzy logic problems). Any info on this please.Shaun

you can do it yourself. Aslong as you have the magna manual.
but a lil bit of $ and you can get a auto trans place do it
your shifting should b smooth. Service it and tey should be smooth after.
if you leave it for too long you may start ***ing the box internals up!
if you do it yourself look for white bulbs of oil. means you been thrashing to much and it heats up alot. I had that...a good service will fix it all up!

Hi guys, I just had a glance at my dipstick in the light with a white tissue and the color is a tan shade. Also I noticed one side of the stick is for hot and one for cold, well the fluid is way above the hot mark and I think the cold mark is about 10mm from the bottom of the stick and if thats the case its WAAAAAY above the cold fill line. Can someone pls confirm where the cold mark is on the stick and would this possibly cause my probs. I cannot find a service manual either so can someone please share the steps with me as to doing this. Do I just drain the oil and replace the screw on canister filter and refil or is there more. Can i remove the cooler pipe and disconnect the coil lead and crank it over to pump out the convertor? Thanks for your patience all. Cheers Shaun

http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4122 i think it was where we talked about how to flush the auto box
i've had some bad exp with the auto fluid. with our 100 000km service, the garage (not mentioning names) changed our fluid for us. when i got home everything seemed fine, gear shifts etc. the next morning i get up, i find that there's a little puddle of auto fluid (fresh red darkish sorta stuff) on my garage floor  i didn't take notice of it, and the next morning i got up, the puddle had got just that little bigger, so i get to the dipstick and find that they overfilled my ATF. it was a few cm above where its supposed to be. desipite that, over time, (now 130 000km, 5000 more till next service) auto trans has been fine, and ATF has stopped leaking. anywayz, just a story :D
