You're prob better off only getting a replacement airbag, installing it, then going to a mitsu dealer to have the error codes cleared if possible. The SRS light is based on if there is an error code on the SRS computer, swapping the SRS computer clears the code and turns the light off so if you can get it for under $70ish, go for it. (just make sure the battery is disconnected!)

not bad, in that case grab it and make sure to disconnect the battery during installation, your SRS light should go off straight away.

back to the origional post where are the airback computer (or is that contained in the ecu) and collision sensor located?

PeteW,

Might be best to go to Tech Torque forum - find the "workshop Manual" sticky thread and download the files that suit your wifes car - 3rd Gen file is a hugely easy to use PDF set-up - covers all aspects of the car and servicing -it is the gen Misibishi manual as used in Dealerships, just as a PDF file.

Read the SRS (airbag) Chapter carefully - esp warnings about safety and so on..... I got lazy and careless when replacing a steering-wheel, and have caused a fault in my Drivers Airbag (maybe fixing tomorrow, I hope). The manual mentions what may be my problem, but not in much detail. If it suggests you disconnect the battery when working on the system, I recommend that you COMPLY! All best with your job.

The airbag computer is under the centre console armrest IIRC, you will have to take the whole centre console armrest out to get to it.

Incorrect.

Pete is right its on the firewall, just behind where your stereo usually sits, and its the one with the yellow plug/lead, all airbag safety devices have yellow cabling.

Damn, I swear I seen it there... Unless I was looking at a second gen?

My bad, I have a bad memory... Thats why I put "IIRC" on all my posts :P

Yay me! I finally got my damned Airbag/SRS light to go out after changing a stock TJ Sports black leather wheel for a Ralliart Balck/Red jobby. Has been a month or two - kept forgetting to pick-up the Torx bits from the farm, and had a long period of bringing the Verada to farm, not the Sports.

What fixed it? Well, plugging the Airbag connector on PROPERLY - I just hadn't pushed it hard enough originally. Once actually fully seated, wheel back together, battery terminals cleaned/reconnected/greased........ Airbag light went away!!! Just as the "Tech Torque" manuals suggest - if fault corrected, code is cleared and light goes out.

For PeteW - just noticed (this being your thread and all) that the Tech Torque manuals cover TH-TW - sorry, I thought TE-TF were in there too, cos the 2nd Gens have info there.

The Workshop Manuals for TH and TJ show only the Driver/Passenger Airbag Modules, and the SRS ECU - I have checked both the SRS Chapter, and the Circuit Diagrams for SRS in the Chassis Electrical chapter...... both areas show no extra "crash sensors" - there is a G-Force sensor and a "Safeing" G-force sensor within the SRS ECU. From memory an old KS Verada had crash sensors near the front of the car, somewhere like the front of the chassis rails around abouts the radiator support panel.... in TH and TJ, this must be redundant and SRS ECU does all the sensing from witihin the CABIN ??

Thus, long story short - I dunno if TE and TF have remote crash sensors somewhere at front of car (as KS VErada had) or if its all done within the SRS ECU as for TH and TJ. I'd be getting my hands on a TE/TF Manual, even try your local library?

looks like a trip to melb tomorrow to try source parts i went to get them today someone beat me too it or stole them the owner of the wreckers is dam sure he didnt sell them, looks like the only components i need to change at most are srs ecu, clock spring harness and airbag, jollys website is down can anyone suggest some wreckers in dandy apart from jollys i can check out

if your wondering what this costs new:
$276 clock spring
$73.55 harnes (6 inches of wire and a plug)
$518.00 module (airbag)
$757.41 control unit (srs ecu)

other TEs at the local wrecker are non air bag i might compaire my TF srs ecu part number with the TE see if they are the same

Pete,

Do you really need to change-out the Clock Spring and the Clock Spring Harness? If wheel wasn't damaged or pulled-off carelessly, the clock-spring should be allright.

I'm surprised at the need to change SRS ECU, but the Manuals def confirm this - the g-force crash sensors must be a 'once-only' affair. Damn pity. The workshop manual says ECU has to be replaced along with Bag modules after a crash.

However, clock-spring (while a touchy, easily-damaged thing) is only a way to transmit power to bag module, horn etc - so shouldn't it still be OK? If steering wheel has been off, OKays I can see clockspring might be cactus.

Hope you have some luck, Phil

dont think its been off the horn etc everythinh still works guess ill put in some k's tomorrow and get it done, think i must have the only TE with an airbag well it is an advance

Mate,

Def talk to anyone who thinks they know, but I don't reckon you'll need the Clock-Spring or the 6" bit of harness - assuming these parts are similar to TJ.

I've had my TJ apart today as changed to a ralliart steering wheel and caused a SRS fault which had the SRS light lit in my guages. Alll fixed now. The airbag module has a recessed connector, the harness coming from clock-spring has a flat piece with protruding connector - the flat piece clips under lugs on the airbag module and locks to airbag module.

Just because a bag deployed, I can see no reason why Clock-Spring and that bit of harness would need replacing.

Will you be able to take the "used" bag module and SRS ECU to Melb with you, just to confirm that part numbers etc match. That'd be safest bet if you are trying to match up parts.

yeah i got 3 cars to drive :)

not taking the TP - GT as it has no air, my blue TF advance is ment to have the tint fixed tomorrow i guess ill go down eirly see if i can find what i need for the TE & get the tint fixed in the arvo, ill go pull the gear out of the TE now i guess been fixin tid bits on the TE all evening its now rwc less air bag

according to the workshop manual the clock spring and harness should be replaced if damaged or dinted so ill find out as i go, yes ill dissconnect the battery and wait a few min

The TE went to warragul mitsubishi today and i found the staff verry helpfull instead of my local dealer in traralgon who just didnt seem interested.

They put the TE on the tester gadget and the fault code pointed to the clock spring, i re-centered the clock spring last night, they cleared the code for me and they inspected the bag as it has a crack along the srs text on it, the srs light now gos out after 5 seconds after ignition.

The staff in service also cross compaired bag part numbers and they said they seem to be the same, they also said they wernt sure if the clock spring part number is the same in a TF as a TE but offered to check if i call them with both VIN numbers so they can compair. i made it no seceret i didnt want to spend mega bugs on genuine bag but i considered a spring if it happened again.

The machanic who done the diag showed me what to check on the cruse contol to fix that and explained how it all worked off the vacume pump etc.

I kind of feel guilty as they didnt charge me a cent, i didnt make it to the city today to look for a bag but i plan to stop by on the way back to get some genuine auto tranny fluid from them tomorrow for the next service to show my apreaciation for the guys saving me a few hundred bucks on parts i didnt need.

Most impressive customer service ... airbag search continues

Great to hear a "good news" story involving a Dealer!! I'm not that happy with my crowd up here in Tamworth - Mitsi has been merged with the GMH dealer and its all down hill from there!

Keep us posted with how you are getting on for the parts, I'm off to mid-north coast NSW after work tomorrow, and possibly to Sydney the following weekend...... (don't expect much by way of Wreckers near Forster/Taree, but its always hard for me to stay away from the yards when I get to Sydney!!)
