Hi all,

Just noticed that on hot days, both the anti-lock and battery lights flicker and/or stay on when idling or on light throttle. They go away once throttle is pushed harder. Any ideas? Is the alternator dying or is my 6 months old battery dying?

Mate, check your connection on your alt first, this can be a sign of the alt not charging though. Not sure of the TJ but I know the TR/S will have similar symptom if the plug loses connection and the tach will go mental too.

Oh and I edtited your title as I am sure you meant Anti Lock not Anti Lick lol

I've been having this problem lately too with my TL.

It comes and goes, but when it's there, it's only ever at idle, or very light or closed throttle while coasting. There's no power loss, no electrical gremlins. The alternator is outputting 14.4v at idle, measured at the battery, and 13.7v from OBD scanner. There's no voltage drop when the battery light is flickering.

The alternator plugs look fine, no crap on the terminals or anything like that.

Well, changing the voltage regulator on the alternator appears to have cured the problem. The part was $75.

had the same problem ... and changed the Transistor Regulator twice so far ... it lasts for only 30,000km

The problem has stopped occurring. I put mine down to heat. Although the problem did not present itself at all last week through the heat wave.

Ok. I spoke too soon. The problem is back and its not due to heat. I have narrowed it down to the following scenarios:

1. Stereo is on.
2. Dring for over 10 minutes.
3. Battery, abs and park brake lights flicker.
4. Try to turn off the stereo via the steering control by holding down the mode button and the stereo flips between radio and CD.
5. Have to release the mode button and try again to turn the stereo off.
6. Once the stereo is off the lights stop flickering.
7. The lights do not flicker if I drive with the stereo off, even after driving for a long time (> 1 hour).

So, any one with any clues. I have booked it in for next week.

Edit:
I forgot to mention that I am experiencing buzzing from speakers. Especially while listening to the news on ABC FM or when there is a lot of bass. I have had the speakers replaced and contacts cleaned etc and it disappears for a while and then comes back.

Possibly a short in the Stereo Remote loom, perhaps - if the buttons not performing as expected, buzzing to spkrs when short occurs, and current drain from short is affecting the warning lamps? Just guessing here.

If you had a look at the Wiring Diagrams and configuration diagrams in the Tech Torque workshop manuals, you mind be able to locate a connector for the steering-wheel remote loom - you could try unplugging at a connector or at the audio HU and see if problem is solved - this would narrow the search for cause?

OK. Got the alternator replaced under warranty. It was over-charging, AFAIK. Driving at night with the lights on, when the battery light comes on, the headlights become brighter and the HVAC lights go out.
