hey all,
for a few weeks now i have been hearing a high pitched squeeling noise coming from under the bonnet whenever i turn the air con on when the engine is cold, and it does it everytime. but if i turn it on after stopping the engine for 10 - 15 mins its not there.
and i have also noticed while driving, i hear a slight squeel and it jolts the car, but it only does this if its under 80kph, if its above 80 theres no problems.
would it have anything to do with the air-con compressor or the pulley. or even something thats connected in that area?
any help will be good.
cheers stuart.

check your ac belt and alternator belt.

Dry? slight cracks in ridges of belt?

nope. it looks in good nick. not even dry or cracks.
would it have anything to do with the air-con compressor itself???

Could do, a bearing might have gone dry, best bet is to **** over to a local AC shop and get them to have a sticky. Or there could be too much tension on the belt as well, causing it to slip

best off not using the AC until the problem is located/fixed if it is a bearing, it can do very very bad things to the ac system...

mate, sounds like you have the same problem i had.
Mine started when i turned the car on and through the next few days it got worse, ended up being when i accelerated. It was the pully on alt belt, the nut that held the pully in had fallen off and so the belt was warping as it was rotating, which was what was making the noise, cause it was rubbing.
Run your car idling, have a check under the hood and look to see if the belt is running smoothly. Big chance its not. I was lucky, my pully fell out when i was comming out of my driveway. Mechanic said, if i did it on the road, would of cost me a few hundred to replace it!

mines been making the same high pitched noise when i accelerate. I've had the mechanic replace it once already, but its back. think i might take a look at it sometime soon see if i can work it out myself.

There are some lubricants you can use to quieten squealing belts.

My TJ did exactly the same thing yesterday, I would think is more likely a bearing or something like magna00 said rather than a belt problem because of the massive load it put on the engine for that second as it squeeks and jolts.
It seems fine after that first start up for the day.
KrazyKr can you please let me know what you find as my car must have the same issue.

Spoke to a mechanic today he said its possible it may have to much gas causing it to luiquify and have too much compression on initial start (of course this would only apply if you've had a recent AC service).

The sounds people are describing here sound similar to my car (TL, 67000kms). I made a video of mine in the hopes of tracking it down.

Video was taken with my aircon off.

mine gives a quick squeek everytime the compressor kicks in and out! also a long squeel between gear changes if rev's are lifted over 5000rpm! only with a'c on! im guessing lose belt!

hey
i got my mechanic to change the air con belt just incase, but the sqeeling is still there!!! wtf? could it be the air con compressor it self??????? or pulley? the noise had come down a notch but better than it was before
edit: could it be the fan/s when they kick in?
