As you all know the Magna transmission is not supposed to be the best out there so wanted to get facts as to how exactly have members fared with their transmissions.

If you could post in the format below, then it will give a good indication

Model: TF Sports
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 4 speed triptronic
Km on Transmission: 186,xxx
Transmission Services: As per book
Rebuild or Replacements: No
Any other info:

I think the Magna transmission is much more robust than what people make it out to be. Regular servicing which includes flushes is the key in making it last.

Oh please let me be the first!

Model: TJ Advance 2002 May build
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 4 speed Auto F4A51K2B5B
Km on Transmission: 110,xxx
Transmission Services: 70K, 109K
Rebuild or Replacements: Yes - Transmission dead at 110,xxxkm
Any other info: Replaced with low km second hand box. Original Transmission was not thrashed since I bought car at 44,000km and I looked after it. Started burning fluid around 55,000km. Occasional stuttering issues on take off started around 85,000km. Massive stroke at 108.5K. Pronounced dead last sunday at 110,xxx km

Model: 01 KJ Xi
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 4 speed triptronic
Km on Transmission: ~215,xxx
Transmission Services: None
Rebuild or Replacements: No
Any other info: I love my gearbox, shifts perfectly, never flared, always nails shifts precisely and doesnt burn fluid. Gets treated worse than a $5 Cuban hooker.

On the other hand, my old car:

Model: 1997 KE Ei
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 4 speed
Km on Transmission: 237,xxx
Transmission Services: Every 10,000km after ~190,000
Rebuild or Replacements: No
Any other info: Metal chunks in fluid, burnt fluid like 50km after replacing, flare between 2-3 & 3-4, hunting for gears alot especially up hills....

Model: 04/03 TJII Advance
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 4 speed triptronic
Km on Transmission: 83,xxx
Transmission Services: full fluid flush at about 80k km due to flaring of 2nd-3rd shift
Rebuild or Replacements: yes, replaced at 83k km with a 5 speed manual.
Any other info: my auto 'box (with tranny oil cooler) stood up to 4 track days with between 160 and 170kw atw. after the 3rd track day it needed a flush, but was still going strong when I replaced it. when you think about it, the 'box outlasted the pistons! lol

14-01-2009, 09:09 AM
Model: 05 TW VRX AWD
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 5 speed triptronic
Km on Transmission: ~82 XXX
Transmission Services: got car at 55k full service history indicated fluid change at 45k by Mitsub dealer, was suspect that this was actually done  (as fluid was not bright red more a little brownish red), so got full flush done at 56k. will get a full service at 90k in 6 months time.
Rebuild or Replacements: No
Any other info: Only problem is when parked on a steep hill, is a little hard to get out of Park sometimes. Otherwise is a dream to drive, changes are smoooooooooth:cool:

(N.B. This is for a previous car....currently in a TS V6 manual......damn the mortgage!)

Model: 1999 KH Verada 3.5 xi
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 4 speed auto
Km on Transmission: Had it up till 187000km, sold to colleague, now probably up to 230,000km. Work sent him to outback QLD
Transmission Services: Transmission serviced as per service book with proper fluid.
Rebuild or Replacements: No
Any other info: Sometimes flares on the 2-3 shift especially if you back off the throttle to make it go into 3rd, and then get back on the throttle a bit quickly, before the transmission has settled itself in 3rd. Otherwise great, no vibrations, 4th gear still locks up on freeways perfectly.

Model : 1997 TE Altera LS 3.0
Type : Sedan
Type of Transmission : 4 speed auto
Km on Transmission : 280,000km without any work at all.
Transmission Services : I damn well hope so!
Rebuild or Replacements : No
Any other info : Something short of a miracle, this one. Another mate's car. He purchased it in 2000 with 91,000km. He gets his servicing done but I've never asked if the transmission's been flushed. I would hope so. Drives normally but gets into 3rd real quick, by 30km/h-40km/h you're in 3rd already. I've seen a few 2nd gen V6 autos do this too.

Well I've had one auto and my sisters just picked one up, so:

Model: KH Verada
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 4 speed auto
Km on Transmission: 130000km
Transmission Services: Once that I know of
Rebuild or Replacements: No
Any other info: Had the slightest flare from 2-3 occasionally, but that was mainly when trying to coax it to upshift early. Gave it a flush in the 15000kms I owned the car just to give it a good clean.

Model: TJ S1.5 Advance
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 4 speed auto
Km on Transmission: 138000
Transmission Services: None known
Rebuild or Replacements: No
Any other info: Absolutely perfect, shifts sweetly and smoothly at 2100rpm without argument, no hard downshifting or flaring, works exactly as you'd expect an auto should.

well heres mine

Model: KL AWD Verada
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 5 speed triptronic
Km on Transmission: 996xx
Transmission Services: once that i know of for sure - was fully flushed at 85xxx ish when i got my 105km service done (early)
Rebuild or Replacements: No
Any other info: car shifts perfectly at all times - occasionally lurches into a gear if i suddenly and drastically change my driving style, but it relearns fast and returns to flawless instantly.
car loves shifting when your at WOT (in legal situations of course...) its smooth quick and gawjuss! (there is no other word to describe it but gawjuss in its shifting)
im going to add an external tranny cooler to it sometime soon - not that i need it, just for peace of mind to make sure its got lots of lovely fluid and its not cooking itself.
oh - will also get the trans flushed again when i next service it - not coz it needs or wants it, just coz i want it done! haha
i also like to shift into neutral when sitting at the lights - in the faint hope / idea that its reducing wear and tear and increasing the lifespan of the trans too (and also to save a few extra ml of fuel!)

Any other info: 2 months after I bought the car, it started crashing into 2nd gear. The dealer (not a Mitsu) tried to get out of it until I mentioned a statutory warranty. The computer was also failing to let a MUT-II read it. So both the gearbox and the computer were replaced. The 'box did another 75,000klms before being sent to a wrecker. Still working well.

O.K, we had two TS's, one a V6 and one the four banger. The 4 had teh original trans at 265k kms and the V6 still has it at 300k kms (in laws own it now). Neither had transmission servicing done, ever.
Our TW is at 80k kms, has had two trans flushes, has an inline trans filter and a huge aftermarket cooler. No issues whatsoever.

Regards, Andrew.

Model: 2001 TJ VRX
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 5 speed triptronic
Km on Transmission: 105,xxx
Transmission Services: As per book
Rebuild or Replacements: Yes, Reco tippy modified
Any other info: My old gearbox around 80,000km used to flare from 2nd to 3rd so I thought nothing of it. Started servicing it every 10,000 due to the oil always being dirty, the mechanic had to flush it four times just to get it back to normal. After towing a mates trailer started getting a whining noise and gears where flaring alot from 2nd,3rd and 4th so I got an auto trans place to look at it and here was the conclusion - heaps of metal and pinion bearings in the oil, 3rd gear was fried, bands from 2nd,3rd+4th where gone and a whole heap of sensors where fried too.

Anyway time to shop around for a new box, spoke to many work shops from places that do drag cars, drift cars, mitsi specialists and holden specialists, funnily enough they all came up with the same solution - they said the pins in the shafts have been known to let go in these things so when it gets reconditioned they weld them up also got a shift kit from the US, chrysler supply them for about $250-$300 which are just a set of stronger valves and springs and they help the box shift smoother. My other option was a manual but the misses cant drive one

Now the gears have much stronger shifts, never had one bit of flaring and has never missed a gear, only time will tell how long it will last lol

Model: 1999 TH Salada... I mean Solara :)
Type: Sedan
Type of Transmission: 4-speed non-tippy
Km on Transmission: ~195k
Transmission Services: None until 125k (replaced fluid), then at about 187k it had a full flush.
Rebuild or Replacements: Nope
Any other info: Smooth shifting 99.9% of the time, the other .1% it flares at 2-3 but it's usually because I've backed off the juice. Very occasionally lags when going into R.

We'll keep the car until the symptoms get worse, if they do, and then we'll think about pros and cons of replacing the trans.

The 5 speed manual in the 1998 TF I had was awesome. Light, smooth shift from the day I picked it up with 55,xxx km to the day I sold it with 198,xxx km. During that time the 3.0L was swapped to a 3.5L VRX/Sports motor and it was driven hard. I didn't do any static burnouts or hard take offs with the wheels turned, so that defiantly helped it, but basically every shift into 2nd gears was HARD....lol Used to love the wheel spin doing that.
